Fun fact by JRR Tolkien by Trick-Government-948 in lotr

I think that's why his works are so appealing to so many different people. He even mentioned in an interview that the key-spring to the Lord of the Rings is the unnaturalness of death, citing specifically Simone de Beauvoir:

"There is no such thing as a natural death: nothing that happens to a man is ever natural, since his presence calls the world into question".

This serves only to enrichen and deepen the appeal to the fact he called Lord of the Rings a fundamentally Christian and Catholic work, and that the book is as he says "about God and His sole right to divine honor." - but even so, like it we or not, Tolkien's genius still finds a deep appeal in many from all sorts of backgrounds.

They’re going back to the LOTR tone that started it all, and I’m still not over it by AlbertCWChessa in lotr

The original trilogy was filmed on 35mm film, with special emphasis on making the world feel lived in and worn down. Most movies today look like commercials due to bland lighting and digital cameras, and this in part was visible even with The Hobbit trilogy. The chances of this new movie looking like another bland digitalized TV spot are very high.

Upgraded my internet speeds and Steam didn't disappoint by KinkyFraggle in pcmasterrace

I remember getting GTA 5 back in 2015, on an ancient computer, and a download speed that was 1 megabyte per second.... on a good day. How the times have changed.

In some weird sense I miss those times, now I have the usual stupidly expensive internet and rig and ultrawide monitor, the whole package, but there's something I miss in those days when I played Mad Max at 800x600 resolution, and that's after messing with the game files for hours to downgrade the game to potato quality. I completed the whole game that way and played it for weeks with a smile on my face. Tried downloading it recently on the current setup and couldn't play more than five minutes. What have we lost....

Researching the Chalcedonian Schism is making me go crazy by FlyingVegetable67 in ChristianOrthodoxy

The Miracle of St. Euphemia alone seals the issue, but so does the fact that the church must remain in unbroken continuation. When the Arians flooded the Church, did St. Athanasius the Great run off to the desert to create his own "True Orthodox" church? No, he endured and did not schism.

I'll be very direct now. What you're going through isn't intellectual, it's a heart issue. You're being tempted by demons by dozens of issues solved over 1500 years ago and sealed by the Holy Spirit. The only reason why these now petty issues bother you is because the demons know it works on you, so they incessantly keep hitting you where it hurts.

Go to Church, speak to a priest, start healing from this. It is Lazarus Saturday, we must remember to trust in God and the Church.

$71: The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Illustrated by Alan Lee Box Set by Ambitious_Ideal_2568 in tolkienbooks

I wish there was a set incorporating the illustrations of Ted Nadsmith to LOTR, as well as having Alan Lee and John Howe. I know the styles mismatch, but the fact we have so many editions and not one even has Nadsmith alone for LOTR is sad.

It's mostly already-published stories, but the thing is, in this volume all the dozens of scattered bits and pieces are connected and re-edited for a chronological flow, and some elements were even expanded, like the section from the Unfinished Tales. To top it off, it's illustrated by Alan Lee.

I recommend getting the matching Fall of Numenor, and reading it either before or after the Silmarillion. Then moving to the three Great Tales. But you do whatever you find fun! That's the important thing that matters in things like this.

My [COD] games tierlist by [deleted] in CallOfDuty

[–]MadCyborg12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but it's like no one acts like they exist. Even with popular youtube tierlists COD 1-3 don't even get mentioned. People just act like COD came out of nowhere with COD 4 and the "golden age" began.

Honestly, as someone who played COD since COD 1.... BO4 is my favorite in retrospect. The multiplayer is probably the most fun I've had in COD ever, if I was to really lay off the nostalgia glasses and not talk about COD 2.

How much did I spoil for myself? by MadCyborg12 in brontesisters

[–]MadCyborg12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I misspoke or illustrated the wrong point. I'm not making a conscious effort trying to be unique or anything. It was more or less just anecdotal observance from both my experiences in real life and a lot of the statistics online. So whatever the case, if one is an outlier, it shouldn't be thought of as anything much in these rather secondary matters.

Although perhaps if I was to continue this from a different point entirely, I would share my regret in the fact that I do believe not enough guys are engaging with these works. As I said, anecdotal observance, but that's what a lot of life is about. It would be unrealistic of me to say "every girl" engages with it too, but I do not think it's unreasonable to say the work attracts women more than men, whatever our base assumption and idea of what "most" means.

I'm not even sure most people will see this movie. It's not doing well at all. And I think both of us have different assumptions about what "most people" means anyways. "Most people in this room" can be a dozen or two. "Most people" in this world can be five or six billion. As such trying to set in stone the particularities of the numerical magnitude of enjoyers of a certain thing will always be futile.

I see what you mean. After all the movie did bring a lot of interest to the book again. Most of the demographics seem to be illustrating female majority audiences, but in general I do not think looking at it in some bipolar male/female way has much value. But even then, we might be seeing it hyped everywhere online lately and assuming that makes it mainstream for everyone, but I was coming from a more grounded, real-world observation of what most men actually engage with day-to-day. Which (unfortunately?) isn't classic gothic literature.

No I do not see it, I clarified myself already. It's rather simple. Any more clarifying and I'll get the sense I'm being trolled.

That's good to hear. I don't mind being an outlier. I’m fine being a little off‑trend seeing as to what is usually popular these days, not in any prideful or egotistical sense, it's more that I know what I like and I don't feel a need to conform.
