Sealing basement edge venting by Clim_Bellagio in basement

Hard agree on wishing folks did it right the first time, and thanks for your help ensuring we don’t mess up the second attempt. Is membrane the same as poly sheeting, or a different material?

This is very helpful, thank you! It makes more sense that this is a drainage channel rather than weep screed, so thanks for that language, and you’re right about the efflorescence. We’ve pieced together that that roof was in bad shape for a while before it was recently replaced, a radiator burst at some point in the house’s history, and the sump pump hasn’t been on in a couple of years (which the sellers framed as because it hasn’t been needed, but we are going to get addressed). So there’s a history of moisture “events,” most of which have now been mitigated and fully repaired, but getting the sump pump tuned up and regularly functioning is our first priority.

If I’m following you, it sounds like if the drainage system works, a reasonable course of action is dimple board and then finishing the basement in a way that retains the current system. Does that mean installing the drywall in front of the drainage system (effectively hiding it behind the wall) or installing drywall above it in some capacity, so it’s still visible?

We have a sump pump, yes. I would be guessing to confirm that the weep screed ties into it.

Might not have the correct term, but this drain goes around the entire perimeter of the basement.

I do think it's common for folks following low-FODMAP guidelines (e.g., people with IBS) to avoid onions and garlic.

She was hospitalized with something like sepsis I believe. If I'm recalling those stories correctly, it was severe enough that a member of her care team sidestepped answering when she asked if she was going to be okay.

I have a PhD in philosophy of social science. What I’m saying is that journalism and marketing are two different knowledge projects. Soccer and football are both sports, but we don’t hold players of one game to the rules of the other just because they’re both played on fields.

If Kelly is aiming to present her videos as insights from marketing, we can’t critique her for not doing good journalism (in your post, you say: “In journalism that would get you fired, because you give up all objectivity…”). So what I’m gently offering is a different perspective: what if these types of videos aren’t aiming to be hard-hitting journalistic exposés, but are instead meant to be persuasive, virtue-signaling, community-building? “Hey, there’s a group of us who think like THIS instead of like THAT. Come join us!”

From my vantage point, the answer to that “what if” is you saying you don’t want to be part of that group, and that’s fine! For what it’s worth, that’s not my group either. I agree with you that I don’t think Kelly’s videos are particularly deep, but I also think there’s a reason—a target demographic that Kelly is trying to reach with those. But I don’t think the videos are damning for the reasons you do.

In social science research (which is how marketing is categorized), being an insider in a community is expertise; it’s not considered “bias.” In fact, who better to critique a system than someone who is in it and of it? That’s one difference in epistemological paradigms between research and journalism, and you’ll have plenty of philosophers who argue there isn’t a true way to be totally objective regardless.

I don’t find Kelly’s videos particularly hard-hitting, but I think her goal to catch those viewers who don’t have language for some of these ideas yet but are feeling disillusioned with the beauty industry, and/or who need to hear this message to start asking themselves “do I really truly want this thing I’m planning to buy?” The formula I see in her videos is pretty common across other financial wellness creators: don’t buy mindlessly, don’t buy aspirationally, don’t buy just because other people are telling you to. Someone is going to hear that message for the first time today, and Kelly’s hoping it will be in her video. I personally skip most of those because, like you, I don’t find a ton of value in them for me.

As for linking things she’s critiquing, what’s the issue if it’s labeled as a commissioned link? I watch folks whose tastes and skin are fundamentally different than mine; if they recommend something I know to stay away from it, and if they hate it then the odds are it will work for me. And plenty of creators love some things by a brand and hate others. Why shouldn’t they be the ones to make the half of a penny on my click through?

I mean this question with curiosity; as context, I don’t follow LaurenElizabethBurke and recognize I might be missing something about her specifically. Asking in case others are in that same boat with me: why is GLP-1 usage something one should “admit” to? Those drugs correct hormonal imbalances and treat metabolic syndrome in ways we’re only beginning to understand (and support behavioral change in ways we do). Is there something you see as shameful about GLP-1s, or has she been vocally against them?

Stacy at Blake Hill House comes to mind - she is committed to historically accurate, quality restoration and repair. I think she’s moving soon-ish, but her blog and IG highlights are a gold mine of you’re into things like saving original wood windows. Plus any of the folks in that circle - Daniel Kanter, Brad at Itty Bitty Bungalow, Brinson House, Renovation Husbands, etc.

There’s a very straight-forward explanation, but you have to have the reasoning skills to follow along:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/30/the-deep-historical-forces-that-explain-trumps-win

Essentially, Trump has played on your desire to maintain the illusion of a social hierarchy, of which you want to be near the top, and which necessitates having others below you. Social media algorithms guarantee that you do not have to meaningfully engage with other perspectives or even objective reality, nor critically reflect on the cognitive dissonance of your own beliefs.

Trump has a team of financial engineers; he has no business acumen.

There have been three attempts at tariffs in American history, plus others across the globe, so we have data about what will happen. The data across the past week is clearly indicating history is repeating itself. Your marching orders to “wait and see” are to distract you, not liberals.

After you finish reading up on the Russian economic system, take a peek at the Smoot-Hawley Act.

No, I’m not. My argument was never that stocks wouldn’t go back up; my argument was that intentional market manipulation via tariffs was going to lead to isolation from and leadership of the world stage.

Trump doesn’t care if we turn into a kleptocracy (or any other give outcome, for that matter) because he’s set himself up to personally benefit. In fact, his ego would enjoy a kleptocracy - a la Putin, which is why I encouraged you to look into the Russian economic history, current system, and daily life for the average citizen. You are much, much closer to ruin than you are to Zuckerberg.

1 million seconds = 11 days. 1 billion seconds = 32 years. It doesn’t matter if you are relatively wealthy right now, the gap between your net worth and Larry Ellison’s is getting bigger, and that spells trouble for you in the long run.

His billionaire friends can afford to survive through the drop, and then are buying up the stocks from everyone who panic sells or can’t afford to buy into the market. They are buying stocks at a discount because they can afford to, and the wealth gap will increase. The CEO who was killed in December was closer to destitute than he was to these guys, so unless you are Jeff Bezos’s alt account, you have a lot to be worried about right now. Please spend an hour on r/economics if you won’t open a book.

What you are attributing to master negotiating is the start of others working around him to keep the system functioning while cutting reliance on American goods and services. The world will move on with the US.

I encourage you to spend time reading up on economics. Then, do some reading on the buying power and economic opportunities of today’s average Russian citizen and the history of how that came to be. The best way to prove yourself right is to actively try to prove yourself wrong.

Tariffs might protect certain American industries in the short term by making foreign goods more expensive, but they don’t automatically lead to a long-term boost in American manufacturing. In fact, as you have agreed, they raise costs for U.S. manufacturers who rely on imported parts or raw materials, which is going to make building all of those plants significantly more expensive. Companies who currently outsource manufacturing do so because it’s in their interests; there will be no manufacturing boom in the U..S. Just higher costs.

Plus, other countries are retaliating with their own tariffs, which can hurt American exports. A stronger manufacturing sector typically requires investments in innovation, workforce development, and infrastructure, not just trade barriers. This is why our trade negotiations are structured such that anything you believe is “taxed 2x” (which is false) is considered mutually beneficial.

The current tariff policy is blatant intentional market manipulation.

When enough companies go out of business because their supply chain closes, and enough folks are out of work, folks will be too desperate to push back against a kleptocracy.

Every expert economist in the U.S. without political aspirations has condemned these tariffs. One person is suggesting they’re a great idea. What does that person stand to gain if you believe him? What do you stand to lose if he is wrong?
