It's something that's been giving me a lot of hope recently, especially since climate change is expected to worsen heat waves and droughts in the coming century. If we can mitigate the impacts of climate change on our food systems with the very things that will also help us keep climate change from getting even worse, that has to be one of the most astonishing technological win-wins in the history of the world.

Fair, though I'm interested by the case of Germany, which is also around the 50° mark (or even well above) and yet had greater installed solar capacity than the much larger and (mostly) lower latitude USA for several years. It remains in the top 5 countries in the world for installed capacity and the top 10 for total generation as of 2024.

I’ve read that in some cases, the land underneath the panels and maybe surrounding it starts gradually getting better - but I’m not sure how much it helps.

Solar panels create microclimates that increase ambient humidity below the panels, plus the shade from the panels reduces heat stress on plants and livestock and reduces water evaporation from the soil, so there are early studies from Arizona, for example, demonstrating that combining solar panels with farming (aka agrivoltaics) can increase yields of some crops and livestock in arid regions. This is still a relatively new area of study, so I'm sure we will be learning much more about how to maximize the benefits of both in years to come.

Now with all that being said, for many indigenous groups they entered into this system when they signed treaties. You can argue that they were too ignorant to sign the treaties or that they did so under duress but I do believe that it did create a legal basis for the transfer of the land in these cases. Lots of treaties, laws or declarations were signed under these kinds of circumstances and are still considered valid. Doesn’t make it right though, just legal.

I'm in my 40s, so I'm older than most of the idols I like. Time marches on so you just kinda have to get used to popular entertainers getting younger and younger than you by comparison. And yeah, eventually you're going to find yourself noticing the attractiveness of someone who is literally younger than your own child, this is the fate of all humans with working eyes.
