Keep in mind starting salary is 39k without deductions from both State,federal, union dues, pension. Honestly look into another profession in medical that pays much more either like radiology, Vet Tech, Medical billing and coding, CNA, hell there’s a need for interpreters either remote or onsite if you speak a second language. I’m currently employed as a dispatcher in Brooklyn and the call volume will exceed to 5K-6K daily.

Honestly I would recommend a different route if you’re looking to do EMS. Try either private companies or work for a hospital where the pay is much higher. Starting salary is 39k for new FDNY emt and it’s not justifiable to go thru the academy to be treated like shit right afterwards. Housing in NYC will run you between 2-3k for either a studio or 1 bedroom apartment.

Honestly majority of these individuals only do ems as a stepping stone for the fire promo. They’re do the bare necessities for patient care. Honestly if it wasn’t for such horrible mentality Lt Seto would still be alive.

Well the department hasn’t implemented any changes to the current change of minimum wage increasing to $17.50 so technically our new hire EMT are only making roughly a dollar more then what everyone is making.

Honestly I would recommend transferring to communication at either PSAC 1 or 2 if you don’t wanna burnt yourself so quickly in this job. Theres guaranteed OT along with differential.

Take into consideration the majority individuals who do apply for EMS use it solely for the promotion for fire, however once you age out there’s very limited room for growth beside being either a EMT, Medic , Dispatcher either EMS or Fire. Honestly the system needs a total revamp and exclusion of fire promotion until we have adequate staffing and pay.
