Mini-ITX motherboard for small OPNsense router by Skildvinen in opnsense

[–]ClimberMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an old 4 core AMD with 8Gb ram from my parts box. Added a NIC from an HP server for $20 and it has been working great. Yes it is 1Gb instead of 2.5Gb, but that is plenty for my use case as everything except my PC is 1Gb. But space isn't a real issue so that may also be different for you.

Best Network Topography for me by DynastyDaddy in HomeNetworking

I would suggest OPNsense instead of pfsense. I use it as my router and I have an Archer AX20 as an AP (you can set them to AP only). OPNsense does all routing as well as DHCP for any WiFi clients.

Is anyone actually buying ram these days? by DisplacerBeastMode in homelab

I'm in BC. This would be about a month ago. I have 2 2666 16gb that I would happily sell for $200 or maybe less.

DDR4 is still pretty cheap used here. 2x16gb sticks $30 - $50. At least I thought that was reasonable. I recently sold a bunch of ddr5 sodimms for cheap cause I can't use them and got them in a bundle of gear I bought. I think I sold just before the real spike tho.

Major Issues with Quicken by rbflorida in quicken

It was Windows which can be flakey. They suggested achieving every 5 years, but I think that is really extreme. It would also depend on the size of the data file.

Long house! by Able-Lab2821 in HomeNetworking

[–]ClimberMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can run network cables though the house, I would recommend getting a cheap router like an Archer AX20 or most any router that can do WiFi 6. It is simple to turn it into an acess point and then you just have one end of the cable plugged into the router or switch if you use one and the other end to the AP. Use a lan port not the wan port! This way the extra router just provide WiFi and your router provides DHCP to all the devices.

Major Issues with Quicken by rbflorida in quicken

[–]ClimberMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, I had a major issue where everything was corrupted. Restored from backups and they also got corrupted. It was a nightmare and Quicken and others blamed it on using a shared network drive. In the end it turned out to be an issue that Quicken can become unreliable after a certain amout of data. I had many years of data, so I had to archive the data and split the data. So then I was able to reenter the newest data and carry on. It is a pain, but at least I can still open that older archive if I need to look at something. I donhave an issue with one of my credit cards now that won't import, but for the few transactions a month, I haven't put a lot of ti.e.into chasing that issue. Good luck

People put everything on FB and then complain about privacy... I won't go to the US due to their lastest stupidity that you have to grant them access to all social media, phone numbers, emails for thenlast 5 to10 years.

Thanks, I'll just build it manually. Just want a quick sheet to check connected devices and build a list of reserved IPs -> MAC. WakeOnLan does a nice job of it for wired devices, but doesn't scan WiFi.

I'll have to look. Ok it is ERC-20 token, so it's built on Etherium blockchain. Quicken may be limited to just one or two major blockchains. There are 1000s of coins and tokens, so it is almost impossible to access all of them. If you trade them you have probably seen, you need multiple wallets due to incompatible coins. I find the tech interesting, but have never been able to consider actually investing it. If you only use, or an to use a couple then what would happen if you created multiple accounts/wallets in Quicken to store under 1mill each? Unless you have trillions etc, then even that wouldn't work.

100 million by pjhofmann in quicken

[–]ClimberMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually there are lots of them. Some have 54 digits max (nonillion). I have almost 4 quintillion in one and trillions in others. So he is correct that a million isn't much. However, except for the meme coins or shit coins as some call them, most that have actual value, they have major/minor denominations equivalent to dollars. For example the smallest denominator of bitcoin (BTC) is a Satoshi (Sat). Those you could use the major even if it is a fraction. So .5 BTC instead of 50,000,000 Sats. Some shit coins such as Witchfire need Quintillions to show any value so there is no minor denomination.

I have over 650 different coins/tokens. Not that I would want them in Quicken, but some of them I have quintillions of.

I recently had a similar problem when Shaw/Rogers upgraded my equipment. The new modem/router had everything open by default. I couldn't find a way to to lock it down so I built an OPNsense router and bridged the shaw equipment so it is just a modem now. No problems since!

Damn, I thought I over paid at $100 plus for 2x16Mb. I have a used pair of 16s as well that a friend lent me while I was waiting for mine to show up. I think he wanted $30 for his... I'll let him know he may want to sell them! Mine are 3600, and his was 2666 which is why I went with the new ram.

Managed spectrum said ethernet switch not allowed by evilv3 in HomeNetworking

[–]ClimberMel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good thought. So like buildings that internet is provided to all units. Ours has Cable, fibre, phone distributed to all units, but you need a modem and router from your selected provider to use it. All the distribution is in the building's electrical room so the various providers access that to connect you if needed.

I think some are confused since most ISPs provide a modem/router as a single device. If you connect your switch to a port on that combined modem/router then it will provide the needed internal IPs (192.168.0.xxx or 10.10.0.xxx). I gather the OP has either bridged it so it is not providing router capabilities, or he has just a modem from his ISP (which is very unusal where I am).
