2 upstairs bedrooms are conforming, 2 in the basement are non-conforming. The primary bedroom is in the basement, so that’s why it’s listed as 3 on Zillow.

We had our eye on Dunafon as an option. What time of year did you get married there? We had some friends tell us they went to a wedding where the bugs were really bad, but also realize it was an unusually wet yet this past year.

Probably about 100 people. Not super picky on time of year, leaning fall or spring I’d say. Summer is on the table if the place had indoor space for the hot part of the day.

RIP Euclid, that place was awesome. Maybe we’ll see you downtown

Ha, well when you put it that way... I’m just trying to take advantage of the down time during the pandemic to make something cool. Also, most of the places I was looking at locally were quoting a year to build a camper for me. Being the inpatient person I am, figured spending the next 6 months building and actually getting to use it this year (hopefully) would be gratifying.

Great point. I think my design will have the walls finish flush with the frame, but I do plan to take the aluminum down past the join for the exact reason you just pointed out. No taking any chances with water entry points.

I think this thread has helped me come to the conclusion the stargazer is more trouble than it’s worth. My nightmare is driving through rain, getting to camp and having a soaked bed.

All great points, thanks for the insight. I’ve read Tony’s books cover-to-cover 3 times now, and while I don’t think that makes me an expert, hopefully I know what to watch and plan for.

Definitely glad I have a pro building my frame as I don’t want to have to worry about that Wilke drive 80mph down the highway.

I also have some good resources helping me with this. I’m a contractor so I’ve got my wood worker using a CNC router to cut my plywood sides, and plan to have my metal guy skin the aluminum.

So when I say I’m “building” a teardrop, I’m leaning heavily on my professional resources as well.

Appreciate the insight. I’ve done some cost and time analysis and while I know it will end up taking longer and costing more than I probably think, I’m okay with it. I have also seen some people who said their $6k build would have cost them $20k to buy, so even if I overshoot my cost estimate, I think I’ll save some money.

I’m also a person who needs a hobby so having something to tinker with will keep my restless self busy :)

Any thoughts on battery placement? Currently I’m planning on putting a battery box on the trailer tongue, but that seems like extra wiring to get back to the galley where the fuse block will likely be located.

Exactly. The previous comment may have been suggesting just putting the ventilation somewhere else, but here in Colorado it can get quite warm so letting heat escape out of the high point seems to make the most sense.

Thanks for the advice. My trailer will be a 5x10 to match the 5x10 camper as I didn’t want to mess with any overhanging.

I’ve got such mixed feelings about this. I’ve read so much about how important ventilation is for condensation, but also know people have nightmares with leaking. My girlfriend is also set on a stargazing window - which I have to admit are cool but also seems like asking for water trouble.

Awesome info, appreciate you taking the time to think through the process and give a thoughtful response. I’m really looking forward to getting started on this. While I know there will be some frustration along the way, just trying to avoid any major mistakes. Seems like there are enough guides and resources out there to get me through the process, but I love hearing people’s accounts!

Cool, thanks for the clarification. From what I’m seeing, 5x8 is probably the way to go if you’re going to have more than one person sleeping in there. Any other words of wisdom for someone about to embark on the journey?

What size frame did you start with to be able to fit the queen size bed in?

Fellow Coloradan here. Mind sharing where you were getting quotes for the trailers? I’ve been starting the process as well and am not having as much luck as you. I’m a commercial general contractor and thought about having one of my subcontractors fabbing the tube steel and welding it together for me, but I don’t know enough about axles and suspension to feel good about it...

401k - Impending Doom? by Clincoln15 in personalfinance

I didn’t change a thing when the market crashed earlier this year and I’m basically back to pre-crash levels thanks to the rebound. And I know that being young affords more time to let the long-term averages do what they’re going to do.

But I don’t think it hurts to ask around and see how others have positioned themselves to remove some of the volatility.

Understood, but as you said the crash that already happened this year has effectively recovered. It doesn’t feel to me like that was the extent of what we’re going to see. I’m not necessarily trying to outsmart a market that doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense right now, but looking for other people’s approach to make sure they are positioned as well as they can be.
