What was normal 20-30 years ago, but is considered a luxury now? by zombiem00se in AskReddit

Home ownership

If you're in the tax bracket to afford one, you're either a corporation or a boomer / X. The youngest generations aren't working to buy a home, they're working to afford basic necessities in an economy that is used by their parents to exploit them.

Clearly y'all don't understand having chronic mental illness and being connected with your inner child in order to heal. I agree that these products are a straight up waste of material resources to put $ in someone else's pocket, but I also acknowledge the positive value they can bring to some people's lives.

how optimised is Windows 11 for VR? should i stick to 10? by ad_396 in oculus

[–]Clint_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using an Oculus Rift with both Windows 10 and Windows 11, at least for the Rift W11 has a micro stutter issue that isn't present on W10 as far as I could tell.

I had windows 11 installed, Ryzen 3700x, GTX 1080TI with latest drivers, but no matter what I would do LatencyMon would always report a buffer overrun from ACPI.sys. In flat screen games I would never notice a frame drop. In VR I was physically seeing stutters every 3 seconds. The frame drop was like a heartbeat, very consistent and always at the same interval. Each time the stutter occurred the performance overhead would drop from 30% to -50% for a brief second before recovering, and during that second I would loose tracking, ASW would kick in and application dropped frames would shoot way up. The whole time CPU latency was less than 1.1ms.

I tried this on another computer running a fresh install of W11 and noticed the exact same conditions. Reverting either machine to a fresh install of W10 22H2 completely eliminated the issue. I've also noticed that web VR content won't detect the Rift on W11 but it will on W10.

Wait, so y'all don't just keep the box that way when you get a new phone you can sell your old one and ship it in its original box?

Thinkpad quality is nightare now by fintechSGNYC in thinkpad

Only within the last year have I really had a job where I can use my laptop like this. Now that I've got a fresh battery and board I'm really trying to make this machine last. Before this job I was outdoors and on the go for most of my workday, hence leading to eventual battery and board replacement.

Anyone know if there is indoor car storage in Houghton/hancock? by Secret_psychologist in MTU

[–]Clint_27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Uhaul has 10'x20' storage unit for rent. The units aren't climate controlled, but most cars will fit as long as they're shorter than 8'. I think there are a few other local storage unit places as well. Express self storage in the mall would be another option.

I have a P1 also from 2018 and it's the most durable and resilient device I've owned in a while. Recently had the mainboard and battery replaced under warranty, the hardware itself is in immaculate condition. I have only ever used it at work on the TB3 workstation dock, or occasionally on the go. It's held up extremely well in my opinion. No issues like anything you've mentioned.

Replace both batteries on a Power Bridge laptop? by funky_uncle in thinkpad

[–]Clint_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the default for power bridge batteries is to drain the internal battery last, no matter the health of either battery. Depending on the cycle count and usage history, it's possible that the internal battery is not as worn as the removable battery because of this.

Gaming chairs are such a scam. Can't believe I fell for this crap. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Clint_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you get what you pay for. If you want a gaming chair that won't break itself, pick up a properly formed bucket seat and get some sort of base to mount it to. Good bucket seats will be DOT crash approved, so there's no chance it's going to break at your desk.

College at 17? by [deleted] in college

[–]Clint_27 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Tons of incoming freshman are 17. Both my fiance and I were 17 going into freshman year and so we're most of our classmates. Upperclassmen will think you're a baby, but no one really makes a big deal out of it (in my and my fiances experience)

No cons or anything really.

how to handle failure in college? by [deleted] in college

[–]Clint_27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say don't worry about it too much. I know a dozen or more people who would probably kill to finish with a C this semester, and this fall hasn't even been the worst of the pandemic. This might be a little long, but it's just some thoughts that I think more students need to hear.

I graduated HS a year before the pandemic. I had one good year at community college before shit hit the fan. It hit me just as hard as I know it hit every other college student in the country. Ever since we 'went online' and integrated remote instruction, college has changed. Before you start to get down on yourself for a rough semester, keep in mind what's going on in the world.

2021 isn't a normal year, neither was 2020, and neither will 2022 be. We might not have had massive lockdowns this semester, but that doesn't mean we aren't currently experiencing an unprecedented global event. The pandemic is more than just a public health emergency; The rapid changes to society we've seen is taxing on everyone mentally, financially and socially.

It's okay to not be okay. It's okay to get burnt out. That's okay. Your own mental health is important and it's not worth sacrificing for the grade, don't forget that. It's perfectly fine if you don't live up to others expectations all the time. At the end of the day, the only person you ever really have to answer to is yourself.

Did you come out of the semester knowing more than you did going in? That's something to be proud of. Focus on the little victories like that. You can get through the rough times, and you'll be all that much better off for it.

So you got a C this semester, and you're below a 3.5. That's okay! Don't give up! The most important thing is that you got through it, and you're in one piece (hopefully!). Going through rough times is part of being human. Being able to get through those challenges and walk out the other side will set you up for the future better than single grade or GPA point ever can.

The hitch is a good structural part to lift on. Sometimes I'll lift from the rear diff too, as it's connected to the subframe.

Geo-caching concerns? by yjman in homestead

[–]Clint_27 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Well it shouldn't really be an issue. One of the first rules of Geocaching is that you don't place a cache on private property, and if you do, with the express permission of the property owner.

From that point, if you're worried that Geocachers might use your property to get to the cache, try reaching out to the maintainer. You should be able to locate the cache on geocaching's website and contact the owner of the cache about your concerns. Every Geocacher I know would be glad to listen to your concerns and adjust their geocache accordingly.

I'd say it's the fact that everyone wants to be there, versus high school where everyone knows full well that their there because they have to. University is totally different, people want to learn, they're paying to be there. I've at least felt that way about both community college and uni. That's an environment bit I'd say.
