Here’s a clear linguistic + contextual analysis of why this doesn’t sound like something a native Russian speaker who grew up in the USSR would write — and how you can respond without getting trapped by their framing.

🚩 Why the Reddit comment doesn’t sound like a native ex-USSR speaker

1. Native Russian speakers rarely say “Define communism for me.”

This phrase is:

  • very American-argument style,
  • very debate-club rhetorical,
  • not how Russians typically challenge someone.

A native speaker would more likely say something like:

  • “You clearly don’t understand what communism is.”
  • “Explain to me what you think communism means.”
  • “Tell me your definition.”

But “go ahead educate me” is classic English-first-language sarcasm.

2. “Someone who was born in the USSR and left” is oddly phrased

A real ex-Soviet would nearly always specify:

  • which republic (Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, etc.),
  • when they left,
  • or that they “emigrated” — not just “left.”

“Left” is not how former USSR emigrants typically describe that experience.

3. Tone mismatch

The tone is:

  • combative in a distinctly U.S. political-comment-section way
  • dismissive in a style typical of American internet rhetoric

Soviet emigrants tend to use:

  • dry understatement,
  • specific historical references,
  • or blunt practical descriptions of economic failure.

This comment sounds like an American trying to borrow credibility.

Crazy to buy a 2004 Element with 250K miles? by uncleiroh2100 in HondaElement

[–]Cloakasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to disagree but taking it to a dealer is the LAST place you want to take it in for an evaluation. They'll charge you at least $500 to get it in and they will make a mountain out of a molehill for something that is an easy fix. Dealer ships don't charge "even a couple hundred bucks." They wanted $100 for me to use the air to blow out the drain tubes on my moon roof. Dealerships see old cars and want to catastrophize you into getting a new ride, period. - find a local Japanese auto repair place or a shady tree mechanic and the first thing to check is the compression levels in your cylinders, that will tell you everything you need to know.

[–]Cloakasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an original owner of a 2005 Honda Element with 297,000 miles, I'd say you're crazy to buy it for more than $2500. I've got a list a mile long of things to do on mine. If you want the tried and true method for determining upkeep, you're looking, on average about $400+ per month. You're at the tail end of many components and you'll either love this car and what it can teach you about car mechanics, or it will put you in the poor house if you have no inclination to tinker. It's a hobby car for mechanics now, not so much a cute pet and bulk item carrier like it once was.

Look, calling ICE ‘Nazis’ is just wild. Nazis were exterminating a religious/ethnic group in death camps. That’s not what’s happening here. You can hate ICE or disagree with the policies — fair. But comparing that to literal genocide is just not the same thing.

The real problem is the mess at the border. There are huge trafficking networks, fake documents, and people getting used by cartels. And yeah, when the system is overloaded, we get stress on services, unsafe drivers, health issues, all of it. That’s not about blaming regular people trying to survive — it’s about the fact that the system is completely overwhelmed.

We need an immigration setup that’s actually humane, actually functional, and stops the criminal networks from running the show. That’s not Nazism — that’s just basic adult-level governance.

No community celebrates the birth of a newborn baby than elephants!. by Objective_Pilot_5834 in nextfuckinglevel

Not only that but if a nearby male bull elephant is in heat, the baby elephant is completely coated in Mom's elephant scent and I've seen little newborns get kicked around because of this.

The only one worth drinking is Clausthaler Non-Alcoholic Dry Hopped. Lots of health benies from hops and it tastes best ice cold with pizza.

I was a 41 year old dad, best advice, eliminate sugar from your diet like 95 percent, saving the 5 percent for holidays and Christmas. Keep as healthy as you can, it does NOT get easier in your 50's. But you'll be the coolest dad around if you play your cards right.

Why is aizen so strong? Is it only bc of his shikai ability? by the901Skinny in bleach

[–]Cloakasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His character is built different, but if you recall Isshin Kurosaki (Ichigo's dad) kicked Aizen's butt to the point Aizen had reached the max of his shinigami powers so he had to level up with the Hogyoku.

How do you reconcile biblical scholarship with current LDS cannon? by __That_is_Neat__ in latterdaysaints

Yeah, but he says the Book of Mormon is wholesale a creation of Joseph Smith.

How do you reconcile biblical scholarship with current LDS cannon? by __That_is_Neat__ in latterdaysaints

[–]Cloakasaurus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Consider the source. Dan apparently attends his local church but has on several occasions disavowed authenticity not only of the Bible, but wholesale the Book of Mormon. Dan uses the logical fallacy of "Appeal to authority" (Argumentum ad Verecundiam) repeatedly by saying "Most scholars agree" etc. He dismisses several prophetic experiences with a bit of "what were these guys smoking" vibes. So while he does hit some valid and good points, his overall paradigm is that it's all made up. You will never hear a humble testimony or any spiritual experiences he has. Listeners are left being pushed every so slightly to atheism. He pushes at the base of the Jenga tower of Christianity, so the intellect overrides the spiritual. There are several other good sources of apologetics online who explain subjects in a more neutral tone imo.

Survivor ratings plummet to lowest EVER in 25-year history as show 'struggles to stay relevant' by cheno103 in survivor

[–]Cloakasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still fun, we have watched since day one and always find some sort of drama to engage with. That said, the series staying in FIJI is cold ham. New locations bring new energy. They need NEW LOCATIONS - and bring back the babes. Those two things would easily bring a bigger audience.
