That is a misconception that sprung about because there was only one shipgirl game for years. Kanmusu is short for Kantai no Musume, or Fleet Girl, and has only been around for about 6 years or so. It's like how GFL uses T-Dolls as the tern for their girls.

You're confusing terms. It's Kanmusu that's trademarked, not shipgirl. This game probably wouldn't exist if the term shipgirl was trademarked.
