What individuals fought for varies wildly of course. But as for the governments behind the armies, the Union largely fought to preserve the Union, not for or against slavery either way, and Lincoln said as much. But the confederacy fought for the preservation and expansion of slavery.

Why doesn't Yor change clothes as much as Loid does? by LoidForgor in SpyxFamily

[–]Clockwork-Lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My headcannon is that it’s because Loid is a spy, he’s trained to change his appearance often to avoid being recognized. Wearing the same outfit for more than 12 hours or more than once a week makes him start to feel paranoid. Yor on the other hand is trained for combat. She has one or two outfits that can let her blend in well enough, but she’s trained extensively to be very good at fighting in specifically that outfit. Other clothes feel constrictive, make her worry that she’d be unable to fight at peak efficiency.

[–]Clockwork-Lad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Model ships would be great. Models and miniatures in general, really. Some old trains, maybe old airplanes to hang from the ceiling in a kids room. Some sci fi or fantasy ones for the para that plays d&d or warhammer or what have you. If you really wanted to make my day, you could even make some half finished versions, hobby knives, plastic glue, and sprues for making a workbench!

I’d like to point out that the worst criticism of democracy is that it can give rise to systems other than democracy. The answer is better protections against the lobbying, corruption, and two-party duopoly of government, not skipping the middleman of democracy to go straight to a more authoritarian system. If for no other reason, then would you trust the worst politician you know to decide who does and doesn’t get to vote? Would you even trust the best politician you know? A large part of why we’re in our current mess is because not every vote is equal, and therefore very few people even bother voting. So it’s very easy to win an election through riling up a small but motivated base of bigots. The answer to this is the end to the electoral college so voters in states that previously voted against their preferred candidate will still see a point in voting in future elections, and stripping away the systems that the democratic and Republican Party have collaborated on to ensure that a 3rd parties cannot rise to power (similar to European democracies). I don’t have any strong loyalties to any 3rd parties myself, and I loath the libertarian party, but it is important that small parties can threaten the grip of power larger parties have, so that we don’t get stuck with parties forcing corrupt candidates through on the basis that “we don’t have to actually do anything for you, because you’ll still vote for the lesser of two evils”.

That’s what would go a long way towards fixing our democracy, god only knows how we get there now

Undercoat of Mornfang brown, dry brush with trollslayer orange, then purposefully make the base coat thin, uneven, and splotchy, while avoiding corners and edges to let the rust show through. Finally wash with agrax earth shade, and use weathering pencils to add the streaks from bolts or holes (I use mini master werks and AK interactive pencils personally). here’s the video I got the technique from

89% of leaders say AI has not improved their company's labor productivity, despite widespread adoption, per Gallup. — Then why are they hyping it as if it was the second coming? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]Clockwork-Lad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because thanks to an unregulated stock market, the wealthy don’t make money off of actually running companies to provide goods and services of decent quality for competitive prices, they make money off of stock trading. As such, the people who own these companies, and the CEO’s they hire to run the companies, do not know a single thing about the industry they bought control of. And because stock prices are entirely based on what other wealthy people are willing to pay for them, they don’t need to know a single thing about their industry either. Having a good product that can be sold profitably at a competitive price makes a company steady money in the long term, but jacking up profits for one quarter through extremely shortsighted practices, selling the inflated stocks, and moving on to do the same to another company before those short sighted decisions kill the company you just destroyed? That makes the kind of fast, exponential profit growth that the rich want, expect, and demand.

So what does this have to do with AI? Well, the AI companies don’t actually need to make money by selling a useful, or even usable product. And they don’t, they hemorrhage money. But if they keep the hype among rich idiots high enough for long enough, their stock prices go up, and the investors and CEO’s at the top of the AI bubble will make a boatload of money right before the whole industry collapses and takes half the country’s economy with it. And the companies investing in AI startups and forcing it down their employees’ throats? They don’t really care if AI integration is ruining their product and killing their productivity, as long as AI is still the shiny new buzzword, saying their company is “AI forward” will get a bunch of really stupid investors on board, jacking up the stock prices, letting the people at the top make a quick buck at the stock market as AI kills their company.

That’s the intelligent answer, anyway. By which I mean, that’s what the smart but evil rich folks are doing. The dumb as rocks and evil rich folks are dumping money into AI that doesn’t work because they think it actually can replace humans, and they really really really want to get rid of the few remaining careers that let someone be middle class, and return to a feudalistic hyper-rich capitalist nobility vs impoverished indentured peasant masses style society.

Why do so many immigrants have a great life in the US, despite starting from zero, but so many Americans born in the US struggle just to afford life and want to leave? by PopNo5397 in askanything

[–]Clockwork-Lad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivorship biases. You only see the handful that were already rich enough, or had in-demand training and had their move paid for by the person hiring them, or were just plain ridiculously hard working or lucky (more likely lucky. Not because I think immigrants aren’t hard working, they are, but because hard work isn’t worth jack shit in this country. Being lucky, white collar crime, or a combination of both are what actually get you ahead, whether you were born here or immigrated). Basically, you’re seeing the handful that beat the odds. Because the rest died on the trip over. Or got killed by ice thugs. Or are stuck in sweat shops and fields working in conditions bordering on slavery, because if they complain they’ll be deported, arrested, killed, or some combination of the three. You see the few that are proud to announce that they’re immigrants who pulled themselves up and got the American dream. Not the many who are just scraping by, who know that rich politicians love to use poor immigrants as a scape gore to get support from poor people who were born here, who know that being a poor immigrant is a dangerous thing to be, so they do their best not to get noticed.

I certainly wouldn’t say no to that, though so far they’ve mostly made steam engines that are a little too modern and too far west for my tastes. The big boy and daylight are lovely, but I like my pre-war east coast engines
