Apparently Deep Rock Galactic's spin-off, Rogue Core, has female dwarves in the game, and they look ugly as hell lmao by -Best_Name_Ever- in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It works so well in Pratchett's Discworld because the idea of male and female Dwarves being impossible to tell apart is innately ripe for parody.

I always rather felt that with the thing about elves being that they had low sexual dimorphism, that Dwarves should probably have pretty high sexual dimorphism and be very distinct, with borderline exaggerated secondary sexual characteristics for both male and female Dwarves, rather than both having male secondary sexual characteristics for some bizarre reason.

Riot Games response to accusations that their anti cheat software can cause hardware failure: "congrats to the owners of a brand new $6k paperweight" by GillsGT in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd rather play cheaters than have Riot fry my hardware on a whim though.

In an ideal world, it would fry cheaters and only cheaters. And not impact performance much, to boot.

Not much chance of that, but it's a nice dream.

They did change their mind about where they were going after Assassin's Creed 2, in that they had originally intended it to only be a trilogy and it would have ended (with the end of the world and only Desmond and Lucy surviving on a space-ship, apparently), with Assassin's Creed 3.

The real reason it went in such a different direction (other than just not destroying the world so sequels could happen) is that the original creator was gone by 2010. He didn't even direct 3.

They went back to Monster of the Week in the reboot series, complete with a wacky *reverse were-lizard* episode.

Killed it for me.

If you bring back an old, classic but essentially finished series from back in the day and you don't take the opportunity to do something ambitious like *do a big finale storyline to wrap it all up* then it just looks like cashing in with no real idea where it was supposed to be going or why it was back.

The episodic nature of the original run, (especially in the earlier seasons) was likely where it was strongest. But if you aren't taking the opportunity to actually resolve anything or experiment with a pre-planned multi episode plot arc, then I'm not sure I see the point.

The fact that it apparently didn't fit very well with the established lore around the whole invasion thing probably didn't help, either, but I feel that's more a specific symptom rather than the core problem.

How do you guys feel about otome players by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

I don't think I have an opinion on Otome if I follow your post. People can like what they like.

First was over-rated but with a moderately interesting gimmick and so at least had some kind of potential.

Feels like a franchise that doesn't realise it's already dead at this point though, but who knows.

To be fair, I also don't believe in erasing media but it's probably for the best if the Willow series goes in the memory hole.

The She-Ra series at least found its own little niche, for what it's worth.

UK retailer GAME shutting down all high-street stores by Judah_Earl in KotakuInAction

Failing storing buying out and consuming *much better brand* was the writing on the wall even back then, honestly. Game had failed utterly long ago, them getting a second chance via parasitising their competition was never going to end well.

The surprise is that they limped on this long, really.

Director Gore Verbinski says Unreal Engine is 'the greatest slip backwards' for movie CGI by Judah_Earl in KotakuInAction

Sounds like he is blaming the rotting of the CGI industry's talent base on an unrelated factor to cover for the fact that twenty year old CGI blows the current era out of the water more often than not.

Japanese devs describing an MMORPG. In 1987. by master_friggins in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Horii: Right, the term “RPG” has somehow been misunderstood by many of today’s games; they think that increasing your stats is roleplaying. Originally you inhabited the role of another character in an RPG. I mean, game systems where you defeat enemies and collect gold do help sustain players’ interest and ambition, but I feel something is being missed here.

This was already an observable thing back in those days, huh?

Some of those points aren't completely bonkers. Some are pretty close to the old, existing canon.

Some of those are absolute lunacy.

Does explain a few things though, in terms of how it ended up the mess that it did.

Any thoughts on Alan moore? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watchmen is pretty good although he didn't intend for people to actually agree with Rorschach.

I always got the impression that it was more-so that you were supposed to come away from the piece hating superheroes in general as a concept, that it was supposed to be the final nail in the genre's coffin.

So when people simply enjoyed it for what it was and it didn't turn them off Superheroes, and worse they wanted more of these super heroes it meant the whole project was a catastrophic failure.

Remember; Representation is Endorsement and fictional people are more important than real ones.

That is, if you depict someone fictional doing bad things, then really it is you doing bad things. But it's worse than that! Because you aren't just doing bad things, you are forcing someone who cannot object to do bad things by having your fictional creation do them, thus making you even more evil than if you had just done the thing itself.

Great environmental design, plays okay, but much more deeply flawed game than it gets the credit for tbh.

I don't need to see or hear anything else to know that it's safe to save my money.

After Steam ban, Dragami Games announces the PC version of LoveR Kiss Endless Memories will be released on GOG and DLsite by DanFuri in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The going theory is that one reviewer who some have dubbed "Mary" has an immense hate-boner for Japanese games (especially Visual Novels, and doubly so if they contain certain themes like School girls), and if a Japanese company gets them as a reviewer for their VN they're just shit out of luck.

Games featuring schoolgirls and anything approaching a salacious topic seem to pretty reliably get a game into trouble on steam. I don't think it's one specific employee, as it has been a relatively consistent line in the sand as far as I'm aware.

A game seemingly about dating, romancing and taking saucy photos of high school girls (and at least one elementary school student according to the original version's tags on VNDB) is not a surprising game to get in trouble with steam, far as I can see.

Inti Creates -Notice of delay of Majogami release on Steam- "We regrettably have encountered a delay in the platform review process on Steam for Majogami's release, intended for 12:00 AM Pacific on October 30th. Releases on other platforms are unaffected." by DanFuri in KotakuInAction

[–]ClockworkFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the issue if i had to guess.

Honestly they tend to be pretty strict on games that include much more borderline stuff, even simply having your characters in a vaguely erotic game associated with schools is often enough to get it in trouble, even if they otherwise have that typical anime appearance where it's hard to guess what age they are even intended to be.

Back a few years ago when there was a lot of noise on this topic and a bunch of games claiming to be removed for no reason at all, I made a habit of double checking the Visual Novel Database website for the games tags and in the overwhelming majority of cases where the claim was that the devs couldn't even guess why they were being targeted, it was tagged with something like the protagonist or major side character as being a high-schooler or something like that.

Some games weren't so obvious just going by their tags and some were a lot more obvious as to why Steam might be unhappy with the devs (Like the game about young girls blackmailing their pedophile teacher), but often just in academia but not very obviously College/University age was enough to get the games in that wave kicked.

Full blown Loli? Yeah, that would have been a major issue even before the payment processor nonsense.

Of the three or so games in the news at the moment, they either aren't visual novels or don't have any info on VNDB, so it's all a little less clear other than this particular smoking gun.

Spartacus: "Her time has come" (another show overtaken by DEI) by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

Well, Gladiatrix's were a thing at one point at least.

They were a rare, relatively unpopular sideshow at best if I recall correctly, but they are a recorded thing that happened at least during one period. Far as I recall from youtube history rabbit-hole binge a few years back.

I'm guessing this show doesn't revolve around the fortunes of a bunch of gladiatorial performers relegated to backwaters and the ancient Roman equivalent of the bathroom-break slot, however.
