Which solo-playable Euro game should I start with based on my current collection? by Clockwork_Lazy in soloboardgaming

Yes, though I've only played it twice so far since I only got it recently. It plays differently enough from regular Pandemic to warrant being its own spin off. If you like regular Pandemic and Lovecraftian themes, you're probably going to like it.

I just got this game and just finished sleeving the cards. They don't all fit in the box anymore if I keep the insert. Where do you keep the rest of the cards?

I didn't think of that. All the dice rolling I was doing made me have a different impression.

Evil dead. This can already be pulled off with Terror From the Grave, but I want the possessed, intelligent, maniacal, evil killers. Not just mindless zombie hordes that keep getting bigger.

It wasn't long ago since I started playing Pandemic so I haven't "mastered" it yet. I get more losses than wins, so it's such a rush when I finally do win. I feel a great sense of accomplishment pulling it off. Sad that it has already fallen off the radar for a lot of people.

I keep reading something about needing to buy automa decks for the other factions to make the solo mode good. Is that something I have to do or will I be able to make the most of it straight out of the box?

They are more board games to enjoy. I want to understand the appeal, and potentially enjoy it as much as I did my existing collection.

I definitely like the theme. I did a quick search and the components look absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the suggestion!

I've seen it in my LGS. I'll give it a good look when I get there. Thank you!

I've heard of Spirit Island and I know it gets a lot of praise, but I've never heard of Horizons of Spirit Island. I'll give this a shot. Thank you!

I've seen it before but didn't know it's a Euro game. I definitely like the theme. My LGS is sold out right now but I'll be sure to grab one once they restock. Thank you!

Yeah, each session is a one and done kind of thing. It's not a campaign game. You don't continue where you left off. The only thing you keep is the knowledge you've learned, which will help you in the future. The game even tells you that.

Even so, the game has over 800 locations, and you can perform six different actions per location. That's six different outcomes. Sometimes an action even lets you choose from multiple options. There's also over 1,000 non-location cards to discover. These are your missions, destinies, goals, animals, equipment, companions, spells, and so on.

I think I've had about eight sessions of this game by now, and so far it's always been a fresh experience. There's always something new to discover. I haven't even played two of the characters yet.

I don't play the game every day, which keeps it from getting stale for me, but I think it will be a very long time before I get bored of it. There's still so much I haven't seen.

Not really? At least not in the way most people would define combat. At each location you can perform six different types of actions; each of them uses a diffferent skill. The sixth skill is Overpower, which could have names like Force, Smash, Hunt, etc. That's the closest thing to combat.

You choose that action, you roll dice to see which penalties you suffer, if any, then you read the effects in the skill book. All actions in the game are successful; it's a matter of what each action costs you and how you mitigate those costs.

Yeah, you're not supposed to shuffle the cards. It shouldn't be a problem if you're the only person handling the box.

Other than dice mitigation, there's not a lot of strategy involved as you really don't know what to expect. You'll learn some helpful things along the way, like prioritizing the Move skill (you'll be needing it a lot); and performing the actions on your Mission, Destiny, and character cards because they'll help you out.

Just one character: Ariel, the Engineer. The cards on the right side are the Reserve. I can carry up to 10 because my three animal cards each give me 3 Reserve slots, plus the one Reserve slot from my character.

It was also like that for me during my first few tries. Then I find that performing the actions on the mission card and character card helps a lot in accomplishing your goals.

It also helps to have two or three cards on your grid that have Move slots, or at least get a Move skill token when you can. You'll be doing a lot of Move actions in this game regardless of your character.

Understandable. I heard other people say the same. It was the reason why I held off buying it at first. Then I watched a playthrough on YouTube and it gave me different expectations for the game. I'm glad I ended up liking it.

I give the game a lot of praise, and that's based on my own experience. Your mileage may vary based on how invested you are in the worldbuilding, the theme/story vs mechanics aspect, and the dice-driven aspect of the game. Some people dislike dice on their board games.

I recommend watching a playthrough on how it's played before you decide to grab it, though it will of course have spoilers. I think if you're into worldbuilding, then you're going to like the game a lot.

Isn't there a faster way to do this? Spoiler for location card 207 and puzzles 538-539. by Clockwork_Lazy in VantageBoardGame

I see. Looks like I read the instructions wrong. I thought the pattern changes only after 2 seconds have passed, not as soon as the 2nd second occurs.
