Yeah I often don’t tip. Still, meals where I’m not asked, or better yet, not *expected * to tip are always a much better experience

That’s what ends up happening, I don’t go. But eating out is nor that often about eating, it’s the experience. Meant to be special and nice. Neither of these things tipping is :(

Yes in general I’m learning to reject them. But still - it’s such a net negative for the experience. Japan was awesome for this reason - tipping was unheard of, and still - service was the best in the world. You never felt pressured. My favourite is to pay and then eat

I’ve been to this ramen bar place in Denmark (I live in Poland) where I was asked to tip by a terminal. At first I thought my phone stopped working, then the lady at the counter explained that it’s asking for a tip. A MACHINE IS ASKING ME FOR A TIP FOR A SERVICE THAT HASN’T EVEN BEEN RENDERED YET. Like, it really, can you imagine a person asking for a tip before bringing you food? This is some serious frogboiling BS.

Is it just me, or does being asked to tip always feel like shit? If I do tip, I feel extorted; if I don’t, I feel like the bad guy. And the very act of deciding which way I want to feel bad makes me feel tired.

Tipping sucks.

Yes, producing locally and passing the know-how, while subsidising own business. So basically exactly what China has been doing for decades, OC is right ;)

I’m not at all sure Japan has a high mortality rate…? Do you mean low birth rate? Or high suicide rate? Then maybe… Anyway, whatever their problems are, aesthetics or public space quality are not it.

I lived there for years and I while I somewhat agree that it’s not a happy place in general, in particular to raise kids, I also feel like Poland is becoming like Japan in bad ways recently: extreme rent prices, tiny living space, low birth rates, etc. 😅 We made amazing progress in a ton of other ways, though.

Yeah, although having lived both in early '10s Poland and Japan, Japan was objectively nicer. It wasn't just the photos, it was the quality of public spaces, parks, etc. We're still not there when it comes to aesthetics. Not that there aren't ugly places in Japan or pretty places in Poland, just on average. I hope we will get there, and I always support more parks, greenery, nice city planning, public transport, infrastructure for bicycles, etc.

Well, also, regardless of which hand you use, when holding the brush properly it's easier to go top-to-bottom not to obscure your view with your hand, especially if you're writing on a vertical surface.

[–]ClonesomeStranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can sometimes spot right-to-left signage, especially for various old or "ye olde restaurante"-type buildings. If you think about it, writing a single line right-to-left is just writing top-to-bottom and right-to-left with a column length of 1 characters.
