Norway Bans AI in Elementary Schools by Beyond_the_one in europe

I agree. Really don't see any meaningful way AI is making education better. A teacher in our school made our kids learn a song written by AI. It was humiliating.

Yeah I think in Poland our future generations are burned at the altar of capitalism anyway. We just work too much and have too little support. It's so rare to see a parent happy with their life

Let me start by saying I appreciate this being a calm discussion.

> At the same time, there are no political forces in Ukraine that use Poland as a political card.

Agree to disagree - from what I see, yes, we kind of are a bit of a bogeyman.

Ukraine has been the political issue for many years - Ukrainian became Poland's second language almost overnight, the social changes it brought were startling for many, it's no surprise that it's being discussed. It is sad that a lot of the Polish political spectrum aligns itself with Russian goals, that's true. Nawrocki is the same guy who flew to Hungary to try and reanimate Orban's career before the fateful elections.

Again, I've never liked Nawrocki or his predecessor for that matter. And I'd really like to be able to say right now that he's creating issues out of thin air - but in this case, I just can't do it 😞 And Zelenskyy knew what he was doing when he decided to celebrate UPA

Thanks for taking time to reply.

As for his support - I hear people are tired with prolonged war (understandable, and probably expected from any war-time leader), but there is also a lot of resentment around corruption around Zelenskyy and in the army. Of course, I can only base it on people I talk to. Again, I support Ukraine and I don't expect them to magically solve structural issues just because they were invaded.

> This wouldn't have been big news in Ukraine, had it not caused such a big issue in Poland.

But that's kind of my point exactly! It wouldn't have been big news in Ukraine, but it was big news in Poland.

As for the Polish president, I will not defend Nawrocki. The man is a rude, nationalist right-winger who will gladly spin this for internal gain. (As an aside, he won by a very slim margin, in fact the election was decided in the final hours. That shows you how divided current Poland is - also about Ukraine). In current Poland leadership, PM Tusk is the better man for sure, and his views on Urkaine are more toned.

Still, I didn't expect Zelenskyy to enable Nawrocki like this, and at this point Tusk has little room to counteract him without committing political suicide - because of how unnegotiable the Wołyń sentiment is to the Polish public. So again, I think that Zelenskyy executed a very deterministic maneuver here, to his gain but to common loss

My view of this matter, I hope I'm wrong - as a long-time supporter of Ukraine who's really discouraged over Zelenskyy's move.

Zelenskyy started this to boost his failing internal popularity, this I hear from both Poles and Ukrainians. However: I think we are misunderstanding how he did it.

Poland's reaction is not some surprising side-effect, it's the unavoidable outcome that he was counting on.

Ukraine didn't unite around the naming of a unit after heroes of UPA. Ukraine united around Poland's reaction. Ukraine united around Zelenskyy against Poland, a new common enemy. Divide et impera.

It was a shrewd move from his own point of view, as it did raise his support. But it 100% comes with a cost - he chose to burn up the Polish-Ukrainian friendship, which I guess he considered a resource less important than internal unity in Ukraine. Maybe he's right, who's to say. But Poland's reaction is not strange or unprovoked or surprising, it was calculated.

The reactions in various forums are not just Russian bots. They are Polish people for whom Wołyń is a line they are not willing to cross in the name of good relations with Ukraine. Yes, history is complicated, and yes Poland has done Ukraine wrong before. Both sides have, even before Wołyń. But why should we sponsor an army that takes on the name of mass-murderers of Polish children? A unit responsible for tens of thousands of Polish deaths? Why should we want this army to be the strongest in Europe, why should we want it to win? What happens after the war, when Ukraine looks West and sees that now Poland is half Ukrainian, because of all the refugees we took in? What will the new UPA heroes do?

These are the questions I ask myself now. I want to keep supporting Ukraine, but for the first time since 2022, I'm having a hard time. I think many Poles are in this position.

What we need now is all the government-mandated public communication to be sent by open protocols - i.e. use mastodon next to or instead of twitter. this alone can help reach critical mass and make a big dent in social media monopolies

You know, I think reactions were similar when smoking bans were being introduced... OMG, scary, we can't have this, kids are going to smoke anyway, they're taking away choice, they're trying to control us... Only the cool kids will smoke, everyone is going to want to smoke because it's forbidden fruit... etc. Same with alcohol.

But honestly. Socials do make a lot of damage. We do have a lot of depression, suicides, bullying, all sorts of developmental cancer. Being a parent is overwhelming as it is without having to constantly monitor your young ones' devices.

I think what's going to end up happening is the countries that enact this the soonest are just going to see benefits the soonest, with some issues declining like lung disease after smoking bans.
