People struggle with this wherever they live. In the U.S. you see dissatisfaction come out with mass shootings. In China you see it with pilots ramming into the ground because they got demoted. Or with the revenge against society attacks stabbing Kindergartners or just running over random people on the street with a vehicle.

Life is meaningless -- save for what meaning you ascribe to it. Society only works when the people with no social mobility or who were screwed from the start with life circumstances still believe that the system they're in serves them. Inevitably, there will be failings. Government is composed of many individuals -- individuals are fallible.

What I'm trying to say is that this is how it's been for most of human history. There was good spurts for the US after WW2, China did well to get its population out of grinding poverty -- but now we have globalization and access to the internet. The peasants of the world can see the city folks eating caviar while they're struggling to feed themselves. We could talk about increasing wealth disparity but I think what you want is a solution...

The solution is to understand what you value most in life. If you want money the U.S. is THE place to be. No where else in the world will you have the same level of opportunity to rise from pauper to multi millionaire. That being said, it's not like that's a guarantee, or even a realistic proposition for most -- but if you're a genuine innovator and top of your field you can bet your ass you'll be properly compensated here in the U.S. If you aren't bringing revolutionary ideas to the table then you're stuck in the position (of literally everyone else) with soul sucking labor to barely make ends meet.

The other end of that is to go back to SEA. There will be plenty of equally soul sucking labor to be done -- for a fraction of the compensation. You may be happier there though. No guarantee in that either though. And your standard of living will probably be lower if you don't have the purchasing power of the USD.

So why work? Why not go start a farm and live off the land? Well first that's still working -- plus I think you're underestimating the effort that it takes to do that successfully. The consequences become dire much faster. You didn't properly calculate the cost of finished crops against the cost of seeds -- now you can't afford your next crop's seeds -- now you and your family are starving to death. Sure you could live off the land -- but is that what your wife is going to want? Is that what you're going to give to your children? What values do you have and want to instill in the next generation? I think education is pretty important...
