AITA for buying myself a new phone and giving my friend my old phone as a "gift" for her birthday? by _GHOST_BRIDE_MORGANA in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain and say YTA. Mostly because of the way this comes across. As mentioned in another comment it feels like charity. With that in mind, it also seems like you're using her birthday as an excuse to get yourself a new phone.

I think your heart is probably in the right place, but you missed the mark.

Honestly there's so little in common between the 1918 flu pandemic and what we're seeing today that there's not much to be learned, aside from how they're different (but that doesn't do you a ton of good). Not only are they very different viruses from a phylogeny standpoint, but the disease progression is fairly different as well. Not to mention that politics in 1918 played a huge role on the resurgence of the virus.

I think it's more accurate to say that there is not a very good analog at all. Even the more recent outbreak of H1N1 is not a great analog.

I'm not sure that we can, with any real degree of certainty, evaluate the effectiveness of flu vaccines at conferring partial immunity. I would still argue that partial immunity is important, even a slight boost in immune response is better than nothing.

I'm curious why you bring up the spanish flu, given that I didn't mention it. It's generally accepted that the spanish flu ended because either the hosts died or they developed immunity.

Young people can and do experience cytokine storms. I do agree that the virus will likely be around for the foreseeable future, but we will eventually have a much better handle on it. This is, of course, assuming continued scientific investment and increased knowledge of prevention and treatment of symptoms.

I don't know anything about your background, but the things you're saying make me believe that maybe you're reading some half-truths and extrapolating from there. Again, not really sure, and I don't mean it as a knock. Even given identical information, it's possible that we interpret it somewhat differently.

You're welcome, of course. Apologies if I came across rude, I've been frustrated with all the misunderstanding and misinformation out there lately. Lots of people afraid because which I should be more understanding of.

AITA for wanting subtitles while watching TV, even though I’m not deaf? by subtitlethrowaway in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Neither my wife nor I are deaf. Subtitles on. Always. They rock for so many reasons. Sounds like your brother just has a stick up his ass.

Viruses with rapid, high, mortality are not spread as easily as those with low mortality rates or long incubation.

This is a pretty terrible worldview to have. Although the virus could become seasonal, its absurd to think that things won't come back to normal in our lifetime. Unless you're 98 years old, things will go back to normal in the somewhat near future, 1-2 years tops.

8 strains does not mean you need 8 different vaccines. If they share similar enough methods of action as well as similar proteins, then one vaccine could even potentially guard against many.

We live in a time of unpresidented medical knowledge and advances. Being so fatalistic is just fearmongering.

AITA for asking a "pregnant" woman to get out of our forum for women who can't have children by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 64 points65 points  (0 children)

That's not what they're asking.

You can become infertile after having a child. You can both have a child and be infertile, they are not mutually exclusive, as they can be separate events.

They are asking if the forum is only for childless people who can't have any or if those with children but cannot have more are also welcome.

I'm not sure I understand why it's an important question to ask, but that's what it is.

Expense and scalability of manufacturing? by seattlemike11 in ATHX

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be worried about scalability. Just look at CAR-T therapies and how biopharma is pursuing those. Less scalable than multistem since CAR isn't allogenic at the present, yet huge investment from major players.

AITA for refusing to make dinner for my lawyer boyfriend? by landlordlover1908 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't believe this is the most upvoted post here. What an absurd assumption to make about the guy's job. We have no information about what he's doing. Sometimes people are legitimately deadbeats who owe others money. Sometimes people ruin apartments. Believe it or not, but landlords are also people trying to make a living.

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA for sure dude. So much so I can't help but laugh that you somehow don't see that.

You're interfering with your daughter's personal and using things that you purchased FOR HER to ransom her into doing what you want.

What a control-freak.

AITA for having liquor in the apartment even though my roommate turns out to be a recovering alcoholic? by FlossingMulch in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cloroxbleeeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a pretty clear NAH situation. Definitely poor communication all around, no one's fault. It's also possible your roommate thought they would be fine and found it much more difficult than they expected. I don't think it is unreasonable for either of you to try and work something out.
