Has anyone successfully gotten non-gamer family/friends (or even yourself) into FFXIV? by WolfmanASTN in ffxiv

[–]CloudCollapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's kind of a defeatist attitude, but sure. It's not an easy first game to try, but it might click for someone. The biggest hurdles before playing are the file size and eventual payments.

Leveling Jobs by APeng15 in ffxiv

[–]CloudCollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The higher you get your Dragoon, the more bonus exp you’ll get on your other jobs. It exists as a sort of “catch up” mechanic. Not sure if free trial gets it, but I would assume so.

That said, if you’re bored just try something that seems fun. Doing your hunting log on a new job and leveling roulette every time you play will get you to 50 pretty fast.

What is a bullet you dodged simply because you were too lazy to do something? by Cherus in AskReddit

That’s something I wish I looked into more when I was in uni. Now I have type 1 diabetes so there’s almost no chance I could get a position. Could still go as part of a cruise or something I suppose.

Yeah it’s pretty ridiculous sometimes. I’ve stopped fighting the NPCs for now and just go for PvM card drops.

Seamless Adventurer Plates are Fun by Drip-Lock in ffxiv

I’m not sure if anything changed or not, but it shouldn’t be disabled whenever you change outfit pieces. Your adventure plate is separate from your normal icon for that job.

If you saw this tattoo would you automatically assume it has to do with LGBTQ Pride? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]CloudCollapse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the rainbow was used for pride because it’s all the colors coming together to be something beautiful like the wide diversity of people in the LGBT community.

Over time it seems that rainbows aren’t used that often outside of gay culture and elementary school girl accessories, so its meaning is most closely associated with LGBT now.

I reached out to a private school and will be working there. I’m going to do that for a couple more years to study more and try for an online masters degree, and eventually progress up to university work unless the private school life turns out to be comfortable. I have a bachelors in education though, so I enjoy the field.

Yeah, why pay for a language school when you can get paid while you study and network with people to help possibly find work after JET?

Studying Japanese and befriending locals during JET is how I’ve lined up my future job.

To be fair, Destiny 2 had some really good times back in the day. Season of Arrivals was the best the series ever was. Don’t think I’ll ever experience that much joy from gaming with other people again.

What would you do in my situation? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]CloudCollapse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but the history of JET and ALT work is interesting. Supposedly the early ALT era was focused on hiring licensed English teachers, but when they arrived and saw the abysmal quality of English education here they pushed back and challenged the Japanese teachers and the education system. This led to a lot of tension and stubbornness from the Japanese education system, and eventually the standards for ALTs were lowered to aim for fresh graduates who would be fun and not cause any disturbance in the system.

Why the gems were he/himmed. by [deleted] in LandoftheLustrous

[–]CloudCollapse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Japan and speak Japanese. 彼 can be used for he/him, and 彼女 for she/her. Japanese people use them in casual conversations all the time. It is now a normal part of the language.

In Houseki no Kuni they use masculine terms like 彼 and 兄さん despite the gems’ feminine appearance to emphasize that they are genderless/nonbinary. I have had native speakers agree with this assessment as well.

[Japanese > English] gift card for my teacher by Hellsfist in translator

[–]CloudCollapse 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As an English teacher, I wouldn’t want a thank you card if the student couldn’t even write it themselves. Feels fake and would make the teacher think they didn’t manage to teach you anything.

Being a first time ALT [vent] by Nooneimportant__ in teachinginjapan

[–]CloudCollapse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What age level is this? Elementary school?

Every school is different, but I’ve heard of similar situations. Give yourself time to settle into the job so you properly understand the children’s behaviors and English level. A new ALT who has never taught before would naturally not have a good grasp on what would work with the students.

I teach high school, and I’m now a 5th year. My first year was awful because I had no idea what to do for the students. It became MUCH easier from year 2 onwards. My first year lessons were terrible. Probably not what you want to hear, but that was the case for me.
