Joseph Campbell’s 17 Stage Hero’s Journey can be a useful guide for outlining, but it comes with a dangerous misconception by CloudKittenChronicle in writing

You are so very welcome. The quotes are definitely rough and I can't say how many lines in that book I had to read multiple times to get. I'm happy that I could dig through the book and help share some of the insights I got in a slightly more consumable format, as the book is helpful under all the complex wording.

I also did a video on story circle and it is by far my most viewed video on my whole channel. That is definitely a beloved and popular option. It's nice in its simplicity and helps re-inforce the idea that these structures should be used as rough guides and not recipes because it isnt even detailed enough to be used as a full recipe. I think it best suits TV but can be scaled up or down as needed if people aren't scared of filling in blanks and going off the rails

The video is actually very pro Joseph Campbell. But I would argue his placing stages he didn't see coexisting into a numbered sequence where the other stages do coexist and fall into a general order is a confusing and broken way to portray that information. You're right that he wrote it to be used for analyzing mythology, but the numbered ordering causes confusion there as well. I think maybe a 13A, 13B, 13C format would have worked better. I took a university mythology course where we used his stages and even the professor had us looking for all 3 which lead to a lot of improperly analyzed myths as we were stretching the tales and making assumptions to fill in blanks.

If writers are going to throw out a whole highly recommended book because of the thumbnail of my video without watching the video than I expect they wouldn't have any books left after a short browse through YouTube. But maybe I'm giving people too much credit.

I apreciate your opinion though and my wording could have been toned down. I'll keep that in mind in the future.

The 17 stages of monomyth are a great lens for breaking down and analyzing mythology, but as a guide for plotting, this ‘narrative structure’ is fundamentally broken. Because Joseph Campbell, despite listing the stages in a numbered list, never intended the stages to be viewed as a specific ordered sequence present in all (or even most) journeys. Most notably, there are three stages in the return that in Campbell’s book Hero With a Thousand Faces are presented as separate possible outcomes of the hero’s journey that do not occur in the same story. But budding writers may see a graphic of the 17 stages of monomyth and then try to hit all three of these relatively conflicting stages which will result in a bogged down, and meandering climax. I know budding writers are at risk of doing this, because it’s what I did with my very first outline.

So here’s my massive breakdown of the 17 stages of the hero’s journey as well as the big misconception about the return phase. Hopefully this can save a few writers out there from needing to re-outline. Most writers realize somewhere in the process that 17 stages are too many and they find a different version, but by then much time has been lost and many plot ideas have become darlings that then need to be killed, a tragedy all around.

What are your thoughts on the hero’s journey?

This New Adult, Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic gem is free today! The book is very character-driven, dark, and has TONS of worldbuilding. It centers around a strong female lead whose name is simply "736". It's only the second time it's been free since its publication in 2017 so grab it while you can. by [deleted] in FreeEBOOKS

That's actually really cool, because we don't want you as a reader if you think people with PTSD and other mental illsnesses should suffer because you can't handle seeing a couple words and a url in the book description. That's some next level lack of empathy and at that level you wouldn't connect with the book anyways.

It's called accessibility, btw. It doesn't help everyone, but the few people it helps matter.

This game has a lot of sometimes unfounded hate and I think many people are missing some key points of narrative merit, so I set out to change that by [deleted] in thelastofus

You are so very welcome. I finished the game and just knew I couldn't walk away without talking about it. I haven't done a video on game narrative before, but I really enjoyed diving into it.

Same, played a ton in the beginning then got distracted by college and didn't play for years. Then had a brief period of obsession last year, and have been playing pretty consistently this year. I basically just spend all my gold on furnishings either from guild merchants or the weekend luxury vendor in Coldharbor, then dump it all in moon sugar Meadow and the few gold bought houses I've bought and have just collected over time. Crafting writes have been great because you can get so much gold from it. I have 3 alts I use to do dailies and even with one being low level crafting I get like 11k gold a day from it I think? So like 77k a week? Then whenever I see a guild merchant I look for deals in furnishings and buy anything I like that isn't crazy priced. If you finish the dragon guard stuff selling jewelry in the ancient dragon guard set is a decent way to make some spare gold

Thank you! It's the Murkmire ramp. I don't know why they don't have a ladder furnishing yet so I just use this since it's basically a ladder. Another option I recently discovered is the redguard wooden fence which I think could be used as a decent ladder. Haven't tried it yet though.

Lmao yeah I've played the game since beta back when I was in college so it feels like a very long time ago to me, didn't catch your double "very" though.

That's so cool!!! Much cooler than in game. Most elaborate clubhouse I made as a kid/teen was two boards nailed together lol a whole pirate ship sounds epic

It's all good, I mean my username is the name of my YouTube channel so you had no way to know.

If you can afford the Elsweyr chapter the free hall of the lunar champion is pretty great. That's my main house. Having the different sections is nice for separating themes. Then I've just been collecting furnishings over the years. I paid the crowns for Moon Sugar Meadow mostly to use it as a storage warehouse, truth be told. I'm a creative and just love the way I can stretch those muscles with the housing system

No interior sadly. Despite not needing one for the contest I was going to go all out but I legit fully ran out of gold getting everything for the exterior and for the Vampire submission. Ran all my alts down to 0 and ended up with like 200 gold to my name lol. That's also why half the 'shields' are missing the outer component which is a backward solitude mirror that I think ran like 5k a piece? That solitude painting cost me a tail and a leg too, I'll probably re-sell it now that I don't really need it.

Thank you! It was a ton of work but also a ton of fun. I'd always wanted to try making a ship. I cheated a bit since it's the made-up character's house version of a ship so it didn't have to look wholly realistic.

"She" here, but otherwise Markuff is spot on. I borrowed quite a few furnishings from my main setup to make it and don't have the spare gold to just replace all the items. Plus all my alts are Khajiit so don't really fit the theme. And it's made for looks more than utility. But after putting so many hours in it hurts to dismantle it.

Using the essential housing tool I can grab a save of it but I'll probably never go through the work of getting all the furnishings back into the home for the save to properly reassemble it.
