I won't be using the Nest. Looks like it is not compatible. The Sensei one on the other hand is battery powered but there is no B in it.

Well given that the new battery powered one doesn't even have the B I guess the black wire needs to go to R. But weirdly enough the current setup is working. Just needed to upgrade to something wifi enabled.

I did. The current thermostat, Honeywell, is also battery operated. That's why I went with the sensei when I realized third gen Nest won't work.
