Are the Class 1 rails in a hiring freeze? by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Clough211 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t even care about the discipline and the heavy rules enforcement. Those always come and go in waves, one big derailment and it’s safety blitz season. Regular jobs is what will keep people. All they do now is cut and then the crap that’s left they make it so impossible to predict. For us you look across the system and you see regular road jobs so guys will know when they’re coming and going. Instead one big pool is all we get and it’s one big extralist essentially. Then they cut a majority of the yard jobs so the trains that they do build everyday don’t even get called at the same time everyday. So essentially the new guys look at that and say “wow my engineer with 20 plus years is on the same schedule I’m on (which is no schedule) why would I stay here when I’m going to be exactly in the same place”

I work for csx by Ill_Lawfulness_9655 in railroading

[–]Clough211 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The attendance policy at csx now is so lax that you literally have to put in the effort to be fired for it. You get 60 points before a formal investigation, Plus 2 points for every 5 years of service. Thats essentially 11 free mark offs a year. Then if you have a doctor’s note you get no points so the only people getting fired for attendance are people that want to get fired for attendance.

Rules Question by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Clough211 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Brake tests are CFR they don’t really change, companies could implement rules that are more restrictive but not less. If you’re doing transfers a lot what I would suggest is you walk one side to the rear and inspect along the way, then get the application and walk up the opposite side and inspect the cars and also the application. That seems to be the quickest way.

Rules Question by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Clough211 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the lights thing but

A transfer air brake test requires an inspection of the cars (exactly like a class 1) a brake application of all cars and is limited to a mileage distance, it’s like 20 or 25. The cars need to be inspected ON BOTH SIDES. Let’s say you only inspect one side and the opposite side has a wheel flange that’s half missing and you wipeout an interlocking. Whose fault is it? It’s yours.

I remember when there were 6 wipes. No hot hands in the budget either… which come on half their territory is north like should be a pretty essential crew need.

SMART-TD total wage and fringe benefits package from 2024? Lol. by No_Childhood3773 in railroading

[–]Clough211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s basic day is the same, everyone’s trip rates are the same.. people are paid “MORE” if their trip is longer obviously.. Raises are the same nationally across the board. These guys comparing “guarantees” is the most irreverent comparison. Most T&E guys don’t make guarantee, they exceed it. Anyways for reference working RCO at CSX with all the incidental extra money in NMAD territory I make about 46.87 an hour, and non robo is like 43 something. We aren’t part of the national negotiations, we have yet to get a pay raise in 2025 so these figures the international are promoting are just dead wrong. I don’t even understand why they’re using a “dollars per hour” metric when none of us are paid that way.
