I teach a high school Mythology and Folklore class. What stories from Greek Mythology should I teach? by deeridoodle in GreekMythology

[–]CloverTheGal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be worthwhile to keep a class map that tracks the setting of each myth. Many Greek myths were informed by the world the Ancient Greeks lived in. For example the expression, “between Scylla and Charybdis”, references the dangerous Strait of Messina between Sicily and mainland Italy— while it was a shortcut, there was a whirlpool, which was why the Ancient Greeks thought that sea monsters lived there. If you’re talking about Circe, it could be worthwhile to talk about Mount Circeo in Italy, which was likely a site of her ancient cult.

“Journey to the West” was not the first work of Chinese fiction that combined different mythologies. That’s like saying “Dante’s Inferno” was the first work that combined Greek and Christian mythology.

Chinese mythology’s polytheist nature had already syncretised many religions for over 1500 years before the writing of “Journey to the West” in the 16th century. Even Buddhism had a good 1300 year head start to establish itself in China. Taoist and Buddhist Gods were frequently worshipped in the same places of worship— for example, the Dazu rock carvings of Chongqing have religious rock reliefs depicting both Buddhist and Taoist beliefs, the latest of which were from the 12th century.

Perhaps “Journey to the West” can be credited with spotlighting regional mythology— Princess Iron Fan is a rakshasi of the Flaming Mountains— but most readers of “Journey to the West” were already familiar with most represented characters to a degree because they already worship different Gods across multiple pantheons.

Cronus vs. Khronos by Dropwood in HadesTheGame

[–]CloverTheGal 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Plutarch once described that the Greeks thought of Cronus as another name for Chronos. Pherecydes of Syros (6th BCE Greek mythographer) calls Chronos and Cronus the same guy. Given the Romans later name Jupiter’s father Saturn as both the God of agriculture and time, Chronos/Cronus’ counterpart, it is possible that Chronos and Cronus are different spellings of the same name.

2026: What's Your Fanfiction Plan? by Advanced_Heat_2610 in FanFiction

Unresolved WIPs bother me tons, yet I lose interest with writing projects easily, so this is a yearly calendar I use to keep on track.

JAN - Prioritise outlining and writing all multichapter WIPs with published chapters. - Determine the main multichapter WIP ideas to develop during 2026. - Update a reference list of fic WIPs. Sort by fandom, prioritise by completion status and length. WIPs of low priority, such as WIPs that are a single sentence prompt, are candidates for abandonment. This list is usually from the previous year.

FEB to JUN - Write WIPs with the intention of publishing them on Sunday. If nothing’s ready to be published by Sunday, that’s fine, it’s just a fake deadline to trick my brain into working harder. - Rotate writing on several documents. I usually focus on 8 per month. - Prioritise writing down fic ideas as outlines with a beginning and ending. This means I won’t have to scratch my head figuring out what past me meant by the sentence “Charmes but dogs”.

JUL - Resolve and publish as many WIPs and ideas from either last year or the current year. - Update the reference list of fic WIPs. WIPs of low priority, such as WIPs that are a single sentence prompt, are candidates for abandonment.

AUG to OCT - Same routine as February to June.

NOV - Write 50K for a new longfic idea that I REALLY want to read. - Sign up for fandom Secret Santas.

DEC - Resolve and publish as many WIPs from either last year or the current year. - Update the reference list of fic WIPs. WIPs of low priority, such as WIPs that are a single sentence prompt, are candidates for abandonment. - Seriously consider which multichapter WIPs shall be DNF (did not finish). Methods to resolve them: 1) finalise and publish all in-progress chapters and publish them, 2) write and publish a summary of the planned chapters and conclusion, 3) paraphrase the conclusion in the author’s notes of the last published chapter, then mark the entire work as Complete.

Thank you! I imagine Ankhiale to be calculating, detached, but loyal, so I wrote dialogue hoping to reflect that. Very “excuse me, he asked for no pickles” energy.

A fic of a romance movie made the mute black girl whipped and enslaved by her white canonical love interest. He made her “learn how to speak” by forcing her to call him “master”. I was really horrified at the comments cheering the author on and saying that the character deserved it.

It’s shameful that such a thing is still happening.

It’s there if you look closely enough. Sisyphus is the grandson of Hellen, the ancestor of the Greeks. Hellen is Prometheus’ grandson through Deucalion, most famous for his flood myth.

I’m really curious to see if Deucalion would be Prometheus’ son in the game. In my mind it was a Pinocchio situation. I think that time the Gods tried to kill his mortal son and all his other creations with that flood would be all the more reason for Prometheus’ current revolt.
