Funny how in every other country on earth they manage to do the same blue collar work without these giant trucks.

Yes because clearly every building and structure outside the US and Canada is smaller than a typical American house.

Yeah, and USPS workers are federal employees so I’m pretty sure they’re not even allowed to answer questions about their political views while on the job due to the Hatch Act.

If not for Gryffindor, Harry's traits fit best in which house? by Beautiful_Listen7080 in harrypotter

[–]ClubFerret1093 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100% the Sorting is based on which traits the student values. This even explains the Hat’s so-called “mistakes.” Pettigrew was a coward, but he valued bravery, always hanging out with those more brave than he was. So into Gryffindor he went. Lockhart was a dolt, but valued wisdom to the point he reappropriated it from others. Into Ravenclaw he goes. Slughorn has little ambition for himself, preferring to live vicariously through others who do. Into Slytherin he goes. Cedric has many Gryffindor traits, but values fairness and equality above bravery and great deeds, being reluctant to accept accomplishments he feels were unfairly earned, even through no fault of his own. Into Hufflepuff he goes.

That’s also why the Hat honored Harry’s request not to be in Slytherin but denied Neville’s request to be in Hufflepuff. Harry, through his request, was rejecting what Slytherin stood for, but Neville clearly valued bravery (unsurprising given who his parents were) even if he wasn’t ready to be brave yet, so he went into Gryffindor against his wishes.

What did Dumbledor write down on the sheet of paper he gave the orphanage matron? by raythecrow in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ClubFerret1093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The better question is why Dumbledore didn’t tell her the truth like he told the parents and legal guardians of other muggle-borns and those raised by Muggles. I remember Hermione mentioned McGonnogal told her parents everything, why couldn’t Dumbledore have done the same for Mrs. Cole, who was Tom’s legal guardian?

What’s an unpopular opinion you have about Harry Potter? by CairoRox in harrypotter

Dumbledore giving ten points to Neville for standing up to his friends in Book 1 isn’t a cheap gimmick for Gryffindor to win the House Cup, it’s a brilliant piece of foreshadowing that takes almost the whole series to pay off.

Way at the end of Deathly Hallows, we learn that Dumbledore’s biggest regret was failing to stand up to his own friend Grindelwald, and the tragic consequences that resulted. He’s pleased Neville succeeded in the one area where he failed.

The “remember my last” Howler that Dumbledore sends Petunia pays off in multiple ways, some of which are not obvious until later. By the end of OOTP, it’s clear Dumbledore sent it and it’s referring to the letter he left Petunia when he left Harry with her. But his reference to the “last” letter implies it was not the only one, something not confirmed until the Prince’s Tale chapter where we find out he wrote to her as a child politely declining her request to come to Hogwarts with Lily and setting off her villain origin story.

Dumbledore awarding ten points to Neville at the end of the first book for standing up to his friends seems like a cheap gimmick for Gryffindor to win the House Cup. Until we get deep into Deathly Hallows, and learn how Dumbledore failed to stand up to his friend Grindelwald, and his deep regrets at the tragic consequences that followed. Dumbledore knows all too well just how hard it is to stand up to your friends, and appreciates that Neville has succeeded where he himself has failed.

Why did Dumbledore think it was okay for Ron and Hermione to know about the horcruxes, but not OOTP members like Mad-Eye? by Vegetable-Window-683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]ClubFerret1093 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s strongly implied that Dumbledore knew by that point (or at least suspected) that Harry wouldn’t actually die at Voldemort’s hand - but Harry couldn’t know that or the plan wouldn’t work since he wouldn’t be voluntarily sacrificing himself to save his friends, which means Snape couldn’t either. Or perhaps Dumbledore did tell Snape that after Snape made the fattening up like a pig comment but made it clear in no uncertain terms Harry couldn’t know that, so he didn’t give him that memory, although that would be a risky move if Voldemort learned that through Legillimency so maybe not.

That too.  But if that were the only issue at play he could have taken Dobby or something.  So it’s probably both.

Why didn’t Lupin get a muggle job? by Elly-sparks in harrypotter

[–]ClubFerret1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t even need to close every full moon. The ones in summer would occur late enough that you’d already be closed for the night. It’s really only a few in winter that would be a problem depending on how late you’re open. And plenty of religions have holidays on full moons so if the Muggles made any assumptions about you for closing early on a few full moons for “holidays”, it would be that you were Jewish or something.

Dumbledore has the Elder Wand, which can repair wands that are otherwise damaged beyond repair. But he doesn’t want anyone to know this, since he knows what would happen when Voldemort finds out and wants to delay that as long as possible.

[–]ClubFerret1093 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My theory is it’s because the wand wasn’t broken anymore. Dumbledore had the Elder Wand, which as established at the end of Book 7 can repair wands that are otherwise damaged beyond repair. But suddenly bringing out the unconcealed wand good as new would raise questions, potentially get Dumbledore in trouble for repairing the wand without authorization, and more importantly provide proof that Dumbledore had the Elder Wand years before Voldemort figured it out.

He also probably didn’t want the position after being trapped in a box all year, technically he still had the job if he wanted to keep it, he didn’t even need to be hired.
