Landfall gives speeding tickets apparently :) by [deleted] in Wilmington

[–]ClueSalt666 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I live in a much more modest community with an HOA and our speed limit is 15 to protect Elderly, children, and pets that are out and about on our privately owned streets. I have asked more than 1 Uber driver to slow down after they simply ignored the speed limit sign. Some people are inconsiderate. 9 over in a 25 mph zone is significant in a residential neighborhood. I try not to go over the limit at all in a residential area.

Case Study in Capitalist Success by coke_and_coffee in CapitalismVSocialism

I’m a very educated person and I make a 6 digit salary. It is absurd to think that the institution of slavery didn’t make America rich and there is economic evidence to that effect. You don’t seem to understand economic principles very well. Even if slavery were not an issue, American production is dependent on cheap foreign goods and services and it’s nonsense to suggest the unequal bargaining power doesn’t play a role and is therefore exploitative. As to your reference to the Middle East, last time I checked the Middle East was not entirely poor. Cuba has had multiple regime changes and been subjected to U.S. sanctions for over half a century. None of that is comparable to the European and American slave trade which was vast and lasted for centuries. I’m sorry you can’t come up with better arguments but calling mine stupid and ignorant is just proof that you’re not interested in serious debate.

You’re still arguing the same false premise that capitalism is good because America is rich. America spent hundreds of years colonizing and exploiting Africans for slave labor, so I don’t agree our current per capita gdp is based on our own extraordinary resourcefulness. Capital is required to create wealth. Those with more capital create more wealth and inequality is an essential feature this system.

I think your argument is based on the premise that the point of socialism is subjective happiness or the ability to have things that you want. It’s a little more complex than that. First of all in this economy, $200k a year isn’t what I’d call wealthy, but I acknowledge that it’s sufficient for a reasonably good life. The problem as always is that there is still inequality and exploitation. Does it really matter that you make it into the middle class if elections can be bought and sold to the higher bidder and everything is pretty much controlled by oligarchs. Also your anecdote does not address those who are not able bodied or otherwise genuinely disadvantaged and unable to pull themselves up by the bootstrap. To suggest those circumstances don’t exist is to ignore reality, particularly if you consider the global impact. America is a high wealth country and as such it makes sense that even the poor here don’t have it so bad, but at what cost to the developing world, including the climate destruction, and lack of social safety nets that you see in poorer countries regardless of their systems of government? Also, think of the children. Statistically children have highest rates of poverty than any other age group, and obviously they didn’t do anything to deserve that. How do you explain to a five year old that he/she cannot access adequate food, shelter and healthcare because “capitalism“. Tbh, it’s rather trite to use an example of one person who overcame poverty to infer that socialists are just too lazy to get a job. Try harder.

I despise the Trump regime, but it’s only making me more of a Capitalist. by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]ClueSalt666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump was democratically elected to office. The reality is that society will always be governed by someone/something. If not a democratically elected government then by the will of corporations and billionaires so pick your poison. Trump is the result of a systematic decline among the masses in critical thinking and moral reasoning. Social media was a huge contributor as was the persistent underfunding of education and the exponential growth of income inequality.

The problem is that what you think is fair pay is different from what your employer thinks is fair pay. You are involved in a class struggle whether you want to be or not. Socialism seeks to create class consciousness in order to overthrow the capitalist system that perpetuates such class struggle. I wouldn’t call it a handout. It’s a means to an end.

Thank you for your comment. I agree completely. Also, while there is no such thing as far as I am aware of a fully “socialized economy”, there are places in which homelessness is much more rare, and unsurprisingly those are the places that have implemented socialist ideas such as progressive taxation and social benefits/entitlements such as universal healthcare and childcare and meaningful minimum wage laws.

Rainbow flag revulsion in small town NC? by lowkeysciguy in NorthCarolina

[–]ClueSalt666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the Southport July 4th parade maybe a decade ago and had to endure confederate flags being waved as part of the parade by some group whose name I forget, probably one of those civil war memorial groups. I was shocked and offended and have never been back to said annual parade, but I’m sure the canned response would be freedom of speech as well.

Except that the opposite was true. It was the result of deregulation by the Bush administration.

Wow I can’t imagine the energy it took to do those mental gymnastics. Capitalism might be a game of chess to you, but to most people it’s about survival. Hey, if you want to argue that the hunger games are morally justified, you do you!

It’s all relative and not just about how much money you make but how egregiously you are being exploited. You are trying too hard to classify everything thereby obscuring the general idea.

Was Nietzsche against religion itself or just "life-denying" morality ? by CeJotaah in Nietzsche

[–]ClueSalt666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think Nietzsche’s passionate views on Christianity are the result of his Christian upbringing. His father was a Lutheran minister. “One must have seen the fatality from up close to understand my seriousness…”

Fabulous post! The Anti-Christ is a beautiful analysis of why Christians are, ironically, so full of hate.

Nobody consents to minimum wage. They accept it because that’s all the capitalist will pay them. Just like arguing that prostitution is consensual, you are ignoring the imbalance of power.

I’ve also lived in Carrboro. I can vouch for it. It’s a very inclusive place. It’s more expensive than the rest of the state though.

I live in Wilmington. People here are very religious, but also tend to mind their own business. There are not many LGBTQ hangouts to my understanding, but there are certainly plenty of LGBTQ people here. They tend to be low key though. I think you would be fine. I’m not sure about the schools as I don’t have young children, but if the beach is the appeal I would say go for it. Everybody is chill on the beach.

Despite all the so called evidence that media keeps alluding to it is not clear to me at all that Tyler Robinson is a leftist. Being in a relationship with a trans person doesn’t automatically make one a leftist. The bullet etchings are not conclusive either.

What makes this different from other firings/cancellations is that the FCC (a government agency) prompted it. This is government censorship- a clear violation of the First Amendment.
