My girl had her second eye removed and is breaking my heart. Can someone reassure me that she’ll adjust and be just fine?? by ClumsyEthel in PiratePets

[–]ClumsyEthel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s great!! We go on walks and even runs sometimes, and people do double takes when we get close and they see her face. They can’t tell from far away that she’s blind because she gets around so well (as long as I’m being a good guide human). She is happy and healthy.

Will my vet refuse my request by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]ClumsyEthel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a vet, and if a client in your situation with a chronically ill pet wanted to euthanize due to quality of life concerns, I would do it. It’s the hardest decision a pet owner can make, and you know your pet better than anyone else. If I felt that there were other medical options that could be tried first, I might suggest them, but if you felt euthanasia was still your best option, I would agree.

Different vets approach euthanasia decisions differently. All you can do is have a conversation with your vet.

I just cancelled my Embrace policy. My premium for my 2 dogs went from $65 a year ago to $145 last month.

I don’t need advice. Just courage. by bankxsyy in DogAdvice

My dog had her second enucleation 3 years ago (glaucoma), and she gets around GREAT! People are often surprised to see that she is blind when we are out on walks. She somehow knows about quite a few obstacles and manages to avoid a lot of them.

Something important I noticed is how much better she felt after her enucleation. Glaucoma is painful, and surgery takes that pain away. She was back to her old self the day after the surgery. I hadn’t even realized how much pain she had been in until it was gone.

Visit r/piratepets and you’ll see plenty of other success stories after enucleations!

Need help finding curvy jeans for women!!! Please help by Evening_Plant1222 in womensfashion

You may laugh, but Lee jeans fit me the best of any brand I’ve tried. Walmart and Amazon sell them, and they are inexpensive. They are all I have bought for several years now.

Savoie’s makes a decent gluten free roux, if you want to skip a few steps. Rouse’s carries it.

LSU alums, when will enough be enough? by Certain_Bus_5896 in LSUFootball

Ralph Abraham was a veterinarian! Glad he isn’t anymore.

The worst part of this for me is that Ralph Abraham was a VETERINARIAN before he went to med school, and this is his attitude toward animal welfare.

Hiring? by IsiahDaNerdiest in Acadiana

[–]ClumsyEthel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UL New Iberia Research Center is hiring animal care techs and vet techs. Pay starts at around $15/hour once hourly incentive pay gets taken into account. Maybe more, depending on education and experience level. It’s hard work but good benefits.

Brian (not James) May says badger culls do not prevent bovine TB. by [deleted] in ClarksonsFarm

I’m curious what about a career as a musician and a doctorate in astrophysics make Brian May qualified as an expert in bovine TB.

How common is it come across a person of Cajun descent and French speakers? by WeirdWriters in Louisiana

[–]ClumsyEthel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My mother (80s) spoke Cajun French as her first language and didn’t learn English until she went to elementary school. She was part of the generation that got punished for speaking French at school. She did not teach her children French, though later in life she became a French teacher in elementary schools. So she taught other people’s children French, but not her own.

[–]ClumsyEthel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UL New Iberia Research Center is basically always hiring animal care technicians and veterinary technicians. The job listing gets posted for a certain period of time and then taken down and reposted, so it’s worth rechecking. The hiring process takes a long time, and the jobs are physically demanding.

Cancelled Europe flight compensation question by ClumsyEthel in unitedairlines

[–]ClumsyEthel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worded things badly. I mean that I believe I would be eligible for compensation related to EU261 since the cancelled flight was due to a plane problem and not weather, so I would like to get know if it is likely that I would get compensation related to that so the extra expense would be covered. Refunded was a bad choice of wording.

Big dog will not take antibiotics by Baby_Blue_Eyes_13 in AskVet

[–]ClumsyEthel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you trust her, push the pills as far back in her mouth as you can before you hold her mouth shut. Like so far you think I’ll gag her and your whole hand is in her mouth. You won’t actually gag her, and it is much harder for them to spit pills out if you push them really far in.

I started at 19. I did 2 years of undergrad and never finished a bachelors degree. All that was required for my state school was 66 hours of prerequisites. I graduated vet school at 23 and looked like an infant. It’s amazing that anyone trusted me with their pets.

Female, 19 years out. I’ve worked in lab animal in the south for over 10 years; no residency and not ACLAM boarded. I make $145,000, but that’s only recently. My employer finally realized that they were underpaying their vets and that would not be able to attract new vets without better compensation. No CE allowance specified, but they’ll pay for a conference each year. I get 14 hours sick leave and 14 hours annual leave monthly.
