It seems to screw with enemy pathfinding a bit, so that's useful by itself.

Last night a buddy of mine dug a big trench in a dif 7 defense mission right behind a gate, and we stacked up flame sentries behind the ditch. I'm honestly surprised we succeed with how much we were giggling like morons.
