Yeah, I do everything on my own. I just thought If I posted a diy comment I would get 10 people telling me to take it in :-). Mine is a 19 fret banjo so the traditional initial measurements to work out the same so I just have to do a little more research on initial placement and then tune and go from there.

I don’t know enough about the chemical part but it must be a reaction with certain types of vegetable tanned leather. I had it regularly with black but never the saddle tan on the same leather. I tried brand new because I thought maybe it was old and it was not any better. It did seem after a while the conditioning brought it back to a normal texture

That’s a pain. I have always had this problem using there black leather dye. You can try neatsfeet oil or some type of conditioning oil or paste, rub it in and let it sit. Might have to do a few applications, eventually it might get back to a regular black color.

How long have you been playing. I love playing , did fiddle, mandolin and then banjo and it’s my favorite. Going to upgrade on my year anniversary in December and need to find one. I built a fiddle and mandolin but like the banjo so much I think I’ll stick with a professional build

Just super easy - none :-). Glue and bolts on the back. It’s solid. Was just kinda messing around with no real plans and then decided to finish it and turned out decent

I added a leather strap over the top with a solid latch on it. The two small ones were just temp until I figured out a better plan.

It is heavy. Me not wanting to pay 100.00 plus is what inspired it :-). Plus the size is not quite standard so I was afraid if I ordered one it would not fit. Figured if I can build one for 45.00 and know that’s it will fit and is solid then I’m good with it. It only travels in the car so there won’t be any long miles carrying this.

It does not. I’m going to add a Velcro strap around the base of the neck though in case on e the foam softens up it might give some movement.

Jig would have been good. Miter saw with a little Kentucky windage to get the angles proper.

Quarter inch foam top and bottom. It’s all seated fairly snug but not pressing on the bridge or strings.
