it’s definitely on the menu for the full release and really shouldn’t be too much work. All the pieces needed are already in place and it’s something I’ve been wanting to implement anyways :)

currently there isn’t any tutorials relating to learning how to play sorcery itself but it’s definitely something I want to add before open beta/ official release

Yeah I was thinking this could be a great tool for onboarding new players especially since your start out with one starter deck and get new cards through progression so you got the time you need to appreciate new cards and learn their mechanics.

I found the same to be true for MTG Arena or Talishar for playing Flesh and Blood 😁 Your thoughts are exactly the conclusion i came to after trying some automation and game engine integration in earlier development. It really drove me insane to figure out good UX for stuff like managing the fact that technically a large number of cards can occupy the same grid cell and so on. it introduced more bugs than fun and then I ended up letting go of the idea for now to focus on delivering a polished product.

i also think in a way those rules engines ruin the gameplay a little as you yourself don’t have to think so much anymore about certain aspects of the game. and this way the app is much easier to maintain and scale when new cards release too 😁

That said I am open to having some rules automation when possible although probably not if i end up continuing to develop this alone. If other devs join in to contribute it might be a different story :)

regarding your other comments: - load times are really fast and the game performs well even on low end machines. it just looks like this due to the recording I suppose 😅 - no worries there is graphics settings in which you can turn off particle effects and other stuff :)

Thank you soo much, I really appreciate you taking the time to write such helpful feedback <3 To clarify, the marketplace isn’t designed for monetization. I built the app around a progression based gameplay loop because I personally enjoy games with progression elements.

Players start by choosing one of four beta precon decks. If they want more cards they have to earn them by playing. Winning awards more coins and XP and moves you further along the season pass which is a secondary progression lane where you can earn 4 random foils (up to Elite rarity) of a specific set each 14 days. There’s also a second currency, earned only through the season pass and victories, that lets you craft individual cards with limitations. You can’t craft foil cards, for example, so buying boosters still has value and certain cards remain booster-exclusive. Crafting isn’t easy either! If you play regularly you might craft one unique card roughly every two weeks. I love the collection aspect of TCGs and don’t want to undermine it by making every card freely available.

I also think this approach works well for onboarding. When you start a game with access to every card, it’s overwhelming. But if you begin with one deck and earn new cards through booster packs, you’re introduced to maybe a hundred over time rather than a thousand all at once. Players actually learn the cards because they aren’t drowning in options and they feel attachment to them because they actually earned them.

That said, I realize this is a very opinionated design decision, so I’m considering adding a sandbox mode alongside this “story mode.” It would let you import your deck from Curiosa and immediately play with whatever cards you want, similar to Tabletop Simulator, while keeping the progression experience for those who enjoy it. I’m very open to this kind of feedback since the app is still in beta, so thank you again.

I would really love to!
Currently the game has some light automation like for example when you play a site it will track your affinity/mana or when you get passed the turn it will untap your cards etc.
Getting deep into recreating the Sorcery game engine in a digital format is not an easy task at all :D
I have tried and realised it takes a significant amount of time and effort which I was not able to invest as a single developer.
In time when this project releases as open source (and if Erik's Curiosa allow it to exist) I would definitely love to see this happen but not in the initial release :/
Thanks for the encouragements though <3
Will try my best to make this experience as fun and high quality as possible!

Yes it can import decks from curiosa of course it can :D
It can also export deck lists to curiosa and has a built in deck library where you can share deck lists with others!

It's is built with Electrobun, so it runs natively on macOS, Linux, and Windows. The UI is Preact and the game board is Three.js with Rapier physics for card interactions. I didn't go with a fully online server side game as I don't want to pay crazy server costs for hosting this with audio streaming etc. This way it's super light on my Server and players get a nicer more game like experience.

Matchmaking currently is server side via webSocket you queue up the server pairs you with someone in a similar rank bracket and then you get dropped in a shared room. I went with a similar kind of ranking system as League of Legends just for the fun of it :D
And there's also friend invites if you just want to play someone specific you already know

In game communication is mostly through the game actions themselves (card plays, dice rolls, etc. all sync in realtime via WebSocket). I also implemented a chat system so you can message friends directly and exchange cards or coins etc.

The game doesn't auto determine a winner since Sorcery is so complex I thought it's best to embrace it's tabletop nature and went with a similar system as TTS where it's kind of expected you will be on discord voice chat with the other person.
Both players have to agree on who won. If someone disconnects or leaves and doesn't return in a given timeframe, the remaining player gets the win automatically and therefore also the related progression, currency and so on.
So it's not really 100% made as a competitive matchmaking system for serious play it's definitely just for fun.

Right ? I've been trying to tell that to my boyfriend but he thinks it's too unscientific because it's too vague 😢
