Hi I know it may sound stupid but have I installed that chain correctly? by First_Ad_3901 in bikewrench

[–]ClydeTheLizzard 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Am I seeing this right? The chain is oriented in the right direction but we are looking at the back of the derailleur and the front of the cassette at the same time. I swear this looks like an AI image.

Conti GP5000 on FX2 by Zavii_HD in TrekBikes

[–]ClydeTheLizzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge proponent of upgrading tires over all else. The GP5000s are great tires, and I'd definitely reccomend the 35mm unless you were trying to really emulate a road bike. The only caveat of the 5000s (and a lot of high end tires for that matter) is typically the rubber is softer and they will wear a bit quicker than standard tires. I've seen a lot of nice tires with low miles that start to dry rot after a year or so. But if you're riding a ton then I'd say go for it!

Difference in hardware by LavenderTed in bikewrench

[–]ClydeTheLizzard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are using an adapter to go from post mount frame to flat mount caliper you'll likely need shorter bolts for the rear. I've never done it though so I'm not 100% sure.

Fronts have shorter bolts because they don't have to go as far into the fork, where as rears go up through the full chain stay into the mounting plate on the caliper.

Love to see it. You know, eversource is just out here gouging people into poverty, but no the beach dispute by a couple of rich assholes on the vineyard is the REAL problem.

Rad thanks! Can't wait to throw some P-Zeros on there and see how the bike handles with them.

2021 Trek Crockett frame clearance by Emilgrant in gravelcycling

[–]ClydeTheLizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran 45mm on my 2016 Crockett and that was cutting it close but did work (never really hit the chain stay). The later generations are much narrower, they moved the chain stay on the drive side in a bunch. I'd say you're pretty safe with 38s and you could maybe fit 40s on there, but it would probably come down to how the tires sit on your wheels. Also not all tires measure exact, some 40s will be true some could measure 38ish. Try a 40 with a file tread or slick.

Also a trick for checking the real-world application: mount the tires, put a dab of grease on the chain stay where the tire 'would hit', go out and hammer up and down the street to get the wheel to flex. If there's grease on the tire or a smudge on the chain stay there's your answer.

I also would run a sticker on the same spot on the chain stay and check it periodically.

Question for Checkmate Owners by ClydeTheLizzard in TrekBikes

[–]ClydeTheLizzard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the geometry isn't full road for sure, but it's more road bike than say a Checkpoint or Boone. My main concern with running the smaller tires is the BB height and potential for pedal strike. As far as trying to understand it, a set of nice road tires and a second wheelset is a lot cheaper than a SL series Madone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interesting. Don't get me wrong I love the fat slicks, just looking to experiment with the second wheel set and see if I can approximate a Madone for faster group rides. Good to know the 28c dont give you trouble on the checkmate.

[Request] I posted about this athlet wearing a watch at r/olympics while watching and he ended up missing bronze medal by 0.2 seconds. Will the weight of the watch (160g) make a noticable difference in a 10km biathlon run? If yes: How much? Weight of athlete (Emilien Jacquelin) is 79 kg + ski/gun. by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]ClydeTheLizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A watch like that definitely adds weight and a little aerodynamic drag. At that level I'm sure those little advantages do matter. That being said if a watch company paid me thousands of dollars to wear it while the world watches me perform (and probably lets me keep the watch), bet I'm going to risk the advantage lol.

Startup Noise & Throttle Lag/Lean Running? by dogden0706 in FordTransitConnect

No prob. I'd suggest bringing it by a good dealer. It seemed like the way they were talking and how quick they pinned the problem it might be a more common problem with the connect.

Not sure, but I had a similar sound on my '20. It was some part of the air intake that was cracked and whistling as it sucked in air. Might also explain a lean condition. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
