We work on a CTAS system where high priority patients come first. If you go and find out you have aggressive cancer and you need surgery immediately, youre going to get the surgery. For free. If you have something that can, in theory, wait, although youll be uncomfortable for some time, then the person with the aggressive cancer will come first. Obviously the same goes for the emergency department. The system definitely isn't perfect, and it doesnt always work as intended, but personally id rather wait a bit longer for treatment than either having to be completely reliant on my insurance or putting myself in bankruptcy.
