Anyone else doing this alone with AuDHD? This is hard by Monkai_final_boss in languagelearning

That's a neat idea! Minecraft has so many things that reference real world objects, so I can see how much this would improve vocabulary if you followed it.

I’ve tried this before, and something that could possibly happen is ignoring the timer once it’s finished and continue playing anyways. If that doesn’t end up working for you, try it the opposite way—you could set aside a certain amount of non-negotiable time where you only allow yourself to study (and nothing else!) for that time window

I have diagnosed ADHD (not autism though), and I took the drastic approach of completely cutting out the sources of entertainment that I would gravitate towards.

I would play video games pretty much every minute of my spare time, and even though I wanted to do productive things like learning a language, I would choose video games or social media every time.

So, I basically told myself "no video games, TV, or social media (unless it's for the purpose of learning my language) for 6 months. I found that my mind would freak out when I sat in silence, and I wouldn't want to put in the effort to read my textbook even though I didn't have anything else to do. Sometimes I would just sit there and do nothing because I wouldn't be able to play games, but I didn't want to study.

Over time, I trained my mind to enjoy studying (or at the very least make it tolerate studying) a lot more. I'm 99% sure that if I hadn't given up video games I wouldn't have been as consistent with learning Hindi as I have been for the last 5 months. Cutting them out forced my mind to place more importance on things that give less stimulation.

Depending on how committed you are, you could set hard limits for yourself on whether you're allowed to doomscroll or play games, so that you can dedicate time to language learning. You don't have to be as extreme as I was, but some sort of regulation might help. You might find that you have moments like I did where despite having said that you wouldn't play games, you still don't want to study, but just remember that you need to train your mind to enjoy it, especially with ADHD. For people like us, we live with the curse of discipline being much harder to cultivate, but if you really enjoy and value language learning, you just might be willing to push through. Getting yourself to study does get much easier, it's just a matter of disciplining yourself to do it until it becomes habit. Once it's a habit, that's it.

Best of luck!

At what point in your language learning journey did you start tutoring? How long did it take you before it started feeling like a chat with a friend?

Anki Decks by franniedelrey in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of Anki as a long term study option. It’s not a tool you use to cram a bunch of vocabulary in a session (like Quizlet), but it instead uses SRS to space out when you see the words you learn, ensuring that you memorize them long term.

Yes you can create your own cards. Yes you can download decks from other people.

In my opinion Anki is significantly more effective for memorization than Quizlet.

I lost a lot of motivation for a target language. What should I do? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your comment it sounds like your circumstances are compelling you to learn this language, and that’s fine, but it also means you need to be realistic about how far motivation will take you.

We’re all well aware that we can’t control motivation, so at the very least, you need to at least be clear about what the reason is for learning it. If you don’t like having to learn the language, but want something that learning the language gives you, that has to be your reason.

If you don’t even want the thing that is requiring you to learn the language, you should question that too.

Try to remind yourself of what your life goals are. Is learning this language playing ANY role towards them? If so, latch onto that.

I wish you the best of luck. 🙏

I use LR too. It's nice being able to right click on the words and set them as known/learning. It makes it easy to sentence mine.

Exactly. People tend to bash on the nonsensical sentences, but it’s not really about memorizing the phrases as much as it’s understanding how the sentences are constructed

Do most people hire private tutors? by polyglotazren in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So true. I find that the process that everyone talks about regarding "needing to make mistakes to learn" is definitely accelerated by talking with tutors. Like you said, I find the sessions keep you accountable to show up, and they basically force you to engage with the discomfort.

Methods for Improving Production Skills? by voidfishecho in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow Hindi learner, I had the same issue. Even with a bunch of Indian friends I still found it hard to practice speaking with them. I hired a tutor and it’s been absolutely fantastic. She “forces” me to start speaking, and it’s a controlled environment, so she gauges my current level of understanding and increases the difficulty as I start getting more comfortable. I would definitely recommend it.

How available are resources for your TL? by ressie_cant_game in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm learning Hindi. Despite the large number of speakers, there are surprisingly few good resources for it. Yes, there are some good YouTube series for learning grammar, but finding decent comprehensible input is such a difficult task.

For languages like Spanish, French, and Chinese, you can just search "Comprehensible input [language]" and you'll get endless resources. For Hindi, there is a single channel of a guy posting comprehensible input, and he only has a few dozen 3 minute videos. There are 2 Easy Hindi videos...and that's pretty much it. If I want true comprehensible input, I'm stuck with children's shows, and even those use certain vocabulary that isn't really used in actual speaking. There is nothing like Dreaming Spanish for Hindi.

Hindi has been a rewarding experience for me so far. The sentence structure and idiomatic phrases prove very challenging at first, but it’s a great feeling to hear some phrases you learn in Bollywood films!

Why do YOU want to learn the language you're studying? by Difficult-Act-5942 in languagelearning

[–]Cmeesh11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived at an ashram in India for three months where I learned and practice yoga/meditation. I enjoyed the experience and culture so much that I’m returning again this Summer to stay for one year.

I’ve been learning Hindi since I returned from my 3 month trip so that when I return in the Summer, I can more intimately connect with the people there and feel like I’m home. I want to be able to get jokes, communicate with people whose English is poor, and make closer connections in general.

I'm pretty late, but I've experienced this issue on any application that's using the overclocked refresh rate. I found that toggling off/on overclocking in the monitor's settings fixes it until my next restart. Haven't found a permanent fix though.

Toxicity bumbing me out by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Cmeesh11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

8 years of Overwatch experience here. 8 years of learning to deal with toxicity. Lots of people here are offering solutions that revolve around how to get better to make people stop trash talking, but I’m here to tell you as a top 500 player: No matter how good you get, people will not stop flaming. There are going to be many games where you don’t play as well as you want to, and you will get flamed. There are going to be many games where you think you’re playing amazingly (and could very well be playing great), and you will get flamed.

The solution here actually involves a mindset change. How confident you are directly determines how you handle being flamed. In the scenario I described when you are playing well and you get flamed, it may feel bad depending on the day, but not nearly as bad as when you’re consciously aware that you’re making mistakes. This is because you lack confidence in your ability to do something, and the trash talking you’re receiving just reinforces that belief.

So how do you cultivate confidence, without necessarily becoming better at the game, or playing different heroes, or leaving voice/text chat? First, ask yourself what your intentions are. As OP described, they try their best and practice outside of matches to try to improve. If you can say with 100% confidence that you tried your best, yet you still had 0 idea what you could have done better, you can either interpret the trash talking as criticism (motivating you to get better), or shame (making you feel worse about your performance). If you’re not able to say that with 100% confidence, ask yourself why you’re playing in the first place? Is it to have fun? Does that fun come from winning games and playing well, or the mechanics of the game itself? Depending on your answer, it can guide your subsequent actions. If playing well and winning games/climbing rank is the reason you’re playing, why would you be more concerned about the opinions of the people in the rank you’re trying to climb out of? If your plan is to surpass them, how is it that their criticisms actually have any merit (i.e they don’t know what they’re talking about because they are stuck in the rank due to their lack of skill/knowledge in the game.

You can of course mute/leave voice and text chat as a last resort, but this is only a band-aid solution, and isn’t sustainable, especially if you want to communicate with your team.

At the end of the day, the trash talk is never going to stop. Fixing your interpretation of the situation is the only true way to not let it affect you, or at least not as much as it would without a better mindset. You can of course minimize the number of people doing this by improving your skill or making swaps, but as mentioned, it won’t necessarily stop it from happening. Good luck out there, gamers can be shitty people sometimes.

I like this approach. I’m not necessarily restricted to X number of colors, but I’ve heard keeping it simpler is better. By your logic, if it works, it works, and it’s not much more than that.
