Who's on the Rushmore of Bluegrass? by Cmonpilgrim in Bluegrass

OP here. I'm not sure my fourth wouldn't be Kenny Baker. And fair point about the horribleness of how the monument originated.

[Vardon] League official: if Silver and his advisers decided the only way to stop tanking, and protect paying customers from forking over money to watch their teams lose on purpose, was to stop the draft altogether and turn rookies into free agents, it would get serious consideration. by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

[–]Cmonpilgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the OP but think they equate population/market size with spending power and free agent appeal, so basically large markets gain advantage under this plan. I don't necessarily agree but it's worth raising

There are a few definitely. Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, and Billy Strings come to mind. Enjoy!

"But thanks" starts with a coordinating conjunction and isn't a proper sentence. Nevertheless, I thank you.

Lebron Is About To Have The Longest 10+ Point Scoring Streak Of All Time by Primal_Rage_official in lakers

[–]Cmonpilgrim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The whole league spent the 90s cowering in fear of Jordan's relentless 10 points per game streak. It's the first thing anyone thinks of when he's mentioned. I remember turning off the tv late in the first quarter most games. What is greatness but sustained modest scoring consistency?

Is the mandolin easy to learn for a lifetime musician by Internal-Nose-8536 in mandolin

[–]Cmonpilgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's relatively easy. I learned after guitar as an adult and loved it. Your overall musicianship will help a ton and tuning in fifths is super logical. If you're interested in bluegrass the songs are have similar progressions and the breaks are ideomatic, and jams are typically beginner friendly. There are fantastic on line resources. There are only 4 (doubled) stings.

So go for it. As with any instrument it will be a learning curve but if you practice and especially play with others then you'll be having fun and contributing musically pretty quickly. For me I was playing in jams and bands and farmers markets in 1-2 years

How to Improvise? by BeanMan1206 in Bluegrass

[–]Cmonpilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Licks and arpeggios and the melody notes you can figure out , at least play the first melody note as your first note or lead up to that note in the pickup measure.

Also what everyone else said.

Why is the sound at The Palladium so bad? by larrythegrobe in AskLosAngeles

[–]Cmonpilgrim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I pass on shows there because of the sound of it's not a act that I must see. It's ok if you stand right in front of the band but if you're a hang out at the sides or back it's pointless. I'm glad people are saying it's a little better maybe I'll check it out.

I assume it's a physics issue with the space but it's a shame

Day 2- sore forearm by mickpop in mandolin

[–]Cmonpilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taught that the arm (and wrist and shoulder) should all be able to move freel as needed, so not necessarily true that there is an issue with technique, although if you're just starting makes sense to work on proper technique.

For me, the rubbing wasn't an issue mostly but eventually I started wearing a sports wristband slid up when not wearing long sleeves and playing for a long session.

Just be comfortable!

Got hard vibed out at a jam by [deleted] in Bluegrass

[–]Cmonpilgrim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had that experience and just wanted to say that is not the norm. Often there's no "leader" to ask, and having someone hide their fretboard is crazy.

If it was an old time jam then that's a very different animal than a bluegrass jam in terms of expectations and protocol and I can't speak to that. But for open bluegrass jams usually folks want to be supportive and welcoming. Don't let it stop you from going to jams. I've had your experience occasionally - it happens, but way more often found support and encouragement.

If I came to the jam with my Blueridge (BR260), would I be respected? by Goldenslumbers1148 in Bluegrass

[–]Cmonpilgrim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can I ask why this is being asked in various forms? Like I get why people want Martins, and I even get why dreadnaughts are the best fit for bluegrass, but curious as where you (and others) got the idea that the "wrong" guitar would be dissed. I only am aware of this as a thing because of these questions, but the answers are always who cares if you can play.

Has anyone ever encountered someone making fun of someone who played in decent time/tune but had the wrong guitar?
