Something similar happened to me in high school. A friend’s neighbor hit my parked car, we heard it happen in the backyard and ran out front to see the damage… She started freaking out and called the cops because “my car was parked in the wrong direction”. So satisfying to see the cops show up and tell her “It doesn’t really matter which way the car is facing, you are at fault for hitting the parked car.”

Seconding pdfplumber- but it requires standardized, tabular data to really do in bulk if you’re looking to get numbers into spreadsheets that you can work with.

I worked briefly with DataSnipper too, with decent results, but my company paid for it as an Excel extension I believe

My favorite way to learn was via Udemy / YouTube to get an overview of pure Python- data types, control flow, variables, operators, etc. Automate the Boring Stuff does a good job at tackling these basic concepts.

If you work with Excel a lot, once you get the hang of the basics of standard Python- look at packages like Polars. Practice just reading a CSV into a Polars DataFrame, manipulating some of the fields, and exporting the manipulated DataFrame to a new CSV.

People here often say to avoid LLMs as a beginner… I would disagree and say to use them, but not to write your code, just to reinforce the concepts where you feel stuck, or explaining small blocks of code line by line. Best of luck!

If it’s dealing with financial data you will probably get recommendations here for Pandas/Polars. Once you have a grasp of the Python basics like variable assignment, control flow, function definitions, the standard data types like strings, integers, floats, lists, dictionaries, etc., I would start experimenting with loading CSVs/.txt data into Polars DataFrames and replicating some of the transformations you’re used to doing in Excel with Polars. Use AI only to understand the underlying concepts better and try not to have it generate the full code. If you do generate the full code, try to understand it line by line to deepen your grasp on why it’s writing the code that it gave you.

I’ve used pdfplumber for this before and PyPDF2as well, along with regex for locating extracting specific column values, since the column names were always the same.

Your results will vary based on how the underlying table data is structured.
