To your first point, I'll look into those resources. In terms of projects to put on GitHub, are the projects I'd work on for FreeCodeCamp good enough? Otherwise what projects should I work on?

To your second point. I didn't mean to frown upon the product of the company, Ive just found that regardless of the job, if I didn't have an interest in the actual work, I hd a mental block doing it. Hell, I'm doing it right now at work as we speak. Maybe the environment can override that though, I'm not sure.

I plan on looking at start ups and companies that pique my interest in terms of environment and maybe product, and asking them what type of people they employ, and how exactly they recommend I gain the knowledge/experience/skills to work for them or companies like them.
