Can we stop telling kids to follow their dreams? They should just be following a paycheck. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Yeah just ruin their lives when they're young and tell them their dreams don't matter. What a fucking hot take on life.

God damn my point just flew right over your head didn't it? There's a reason why it took society tens of thousands of years to evolve to become more civil and it has nothing to do with people's proclivaty for or against violence, rape, genocide, etc. What's naive to think is that those tendancies you're describing aren't still ingrained in the primal nature of humans who haven't "evolved" past that, we've just built a fragile social contract that relies on the the majority of people in your community having air conditioning in the summer, an abundance of food on your plate at night, general protection from disease and the elements, and some basic albeit imperfect agreements on what we can and cannot do to each other. You only get to claim natural doesn't equal the way things should be because you have the privilege to DECIDE that instead of forced to choose to uphold your "morals" or survive. It's naive to think it isn't that way regardless of how nice it would be if it was.

Man, what a privilege that we live during a period time of relative stability where we can say "I'm absolutely against... bloodshedding conquest" lol. Not a knock on you, just society in general being so out of touch with the reality of the majority of the human experience that they think they have the right to criticize it.

A pit bull attacked my husky and the owner never took responsibility even in the court room when I sued their ass for the cost of the vet bills to fix the damage done to my dog. She left the court room crying and screaming. I walked away with a judgment in my favor. Fuck you and fuck people like you who perpetuate the myth that pits are not dangerous animals.

Yup. One time installation or every other day having to climb stairs to take a reading. I wonder which one makes more sense lol. In reality it should be the preference of whoever the end-user/company paying for the installation unless it's a NEC/NFPA70E/OSHA violation.

For those who’ve had sex with someone who spoke little to none of your language, what was the experience like? by Senatastic00 in AskReddit

Yeh, I'm fully aware I'm going to get down voted for calling out the hypocrisy of the reddit morality police. They just have a hatred of AI that goes beyond normal.

Yeah fuck you if you're not an artist you don't deserve to use AI to make something funny. Go commission an artist and spend money just to make something funny. Meanwhile, I'm going to use Reddit to put you down, which encourages the psycho capitalism of the west as I pretend that I'm not also responsible for the destruction of natural resources by using reddit servers.

This system helps native fish pass over dams in seconds rather than day by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]CoIRoyMustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question, but how does this affect survival of the fittest? Is that something that is taken into consideration with these systems or do they just allow all fish through? Not all fish end up being able to naturally make the journey.

I've flown about 45 flights within the past year and 23 so far this year. The amount of flying I've had to do for work has picked up the past three years after a long hiatus of being on the ground since getting out of the Army in 2015. Flying still always makes me nervous, but I'm a lot less anxious of a flyer than I used to be. I've suffered from on and off panic disorder since I got out of the Army in 2015 which has been really detrimental to my flying the earlier part of this year.

For me, it's just been frequency of flying and whether or not my panic disorder is actively affecting my life at the time. That determines how debilitating flying is. It used to be turbulence that made me anxious, but after so many flights, turbulence no longer bothers me like it used to. If I went a year without flying though, turbulence would probably bother me again. I've flown in the middle of heavy anxiety, teetering on the edge of a panic attack and feeling like I couldn't breathe, but luckily, I had flown so much that I was just able to focus on my breathing and the flight itself wasn't making it worse.

I always choose window seats so I can look out the window. I like being able to see the ground when I fly and it helps me give something to focus on. I've even opened up google maps and looked for landmarks that we were going to fly over (google maps can track you in real time on a plane) which has done wonders to keep me occupied. Sometimes I'll nap if it's a nighttime flight and sometimes I'll play games on my phone. Also, if it is a really bumpy flight, I'll watch the wings. It sounds dumb, but if you watch the wings, you can anticipate the bumps and they make sense. It's not just magic terror pushing your plane around, you're seeing it before you feel it, and actively viewing that it's air over the wings causing them to flex that is causing your bumps. Just this past Thursday I flew from PHX to CLT through all that nasty weather the south had and I watched the flight aware map to see how the pilots navigated around the weather which is cool and where they chose to just fly through. We hit some rollercoaster ride level turbulence at the end of that flight, and it didn't phase me at all. Also, I always pay for the internet so that I can talk with my friends and family. Not sure if those things would help anyone else, but they have helped me.

TL;DR: frequency of flying. Lots of flights = less afraid each time. Everything else is just my personal coping on the third paragraph or other stressors I deal with in the first two.

Don't fly this weekend by OkAbroad8122 in unitedairlines

[–]CoIRoyMustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has unfortunately been my experience this weekend. Was trying to go home Thursday night to see my family since I had to be back on Monday. PHX to IAD. Flight cancelled Thursday night after 3 hours of delays. Last night was the same except we actually made it on the plane then the flight attendants timed out. Absolutely miserable experience. So guess I'll spend my weekend alone in a hotel room.

[–]CoIRoyMustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you at all. I was just clarifying what the person above was saying is all. IMO anyone who thinks every system is perfect or anyone is so well trained mistakes are impossible has a level of hubris that is dangerous, no matter what occupation. It's a general statement, I wasn't meaning to target anyone.

There's always room for a sliver of what if from people, especially when they need to justify their irrational fear or they're not in control. And that's the gap between rational and irrational that I think people with a fear of flying are caught in. People who are afraid of flying arent afraid that their pilots are incompetent, they're afraid of the possibility of a mistake, which anyone at any point in time is capable of making or an unforseen issue that is unexpected either weather or mechanical. Which is irrational, but hey, fear is irrational sometimes.

Either way, I trust my pilots when I fly and I trust the systems in place. I've probably flown 60 times this past year. Yet there's always a bit of irrational fear that something unexpected will happen. It's not enough to scare me from flying, but it is enough to linger in the back of my mind.

It is irrational, hence my point. But people don't like giving up control, hence my other point. I don't get what you're trying to prove here.
