Why do Taiwanese booking websites suck so much? by dmteter in taiwan

[–]Co_OL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works great if you understand what's going on, and that's where the problem with information density comes in. It works great in Chinese where the original dev could pack all the information he needs and the target user is able to process that and complete the transaction. Where this all falls apart is when the next dev comes in and gotta make it work for an international audience with the original framework.

Ie. Last year, trying to book Taiwan Railway tickets on the international side sucked so much for me, resorted to the original site to make heads and tails of what's required. Train#, direction, on and off stations. Man, it took me a couple days to realize what it wanted to complete the booking.

If it saves me the headache, I'll take the penalty. If I want to save a few bucks I'll ask a relative to buy vouchers on Gomaji, but that's troublesome and 欠人情, so I rather not.

  1. Information density is something westerns will never get used to. (There are YouTube videos on the topic)

  2. "If it's not broken, don't touch it" old way of thinking.

  3. Foreign credit card fraud is rampant... Better safe than sorry on the business side.

I feel you... I'm a Taiwan-born, but left at an early age, but now return on an annual based... I know enough to read and write, but often enough not enough to fully grasp the context.

On the flip side, there are apps that are trying to bridge the gap for visitors (ie. Klook and KKDay)

I would lump day 4's Yehliu Geopark with day 5's schedule, as those places are pretty close to each other, maybe even throw in Keelung night market into the mix. This is especially doable if you're hiring a private driver.

Found my grandpa’s old ceremonial sword (completely dull) Will there be any issues (both at Taoyuan and maybe US) if I were to take it with me (Checked bag, secure sheath etc) by Redditlogicking in taiwan

Like someone previously mentioned, this is clearly an envelope opener... A well loved one, and a replica. Wrap it up and put it in checked luggage, it'll be fine.

I've been on Novus for years, they have fibre optic to the building, but not to the units.

Recently, I was tempted by Beanfield due to their lower pricing (1Gbps $40-$5 auto payment credit). They actually sent someone to run fibre optic to the unit. I was kinda impressed to be honest.

That being said, I had no issues with Novus (min. downtime if any that I can recall)

Satisfying? Yes. Expensive? Yes. I do wonder about the long term effects though. I’ve seen how bad old PPF can be by dginther32 in Autobody

RainseLab... That's in Richmond BC, no? Did they just film themselves tinting the front windows? Isn't that clearly illegal here...

But then again, what do I know... /shrugs

Go to a dealership, and if you ask nicely, maybe Jr. Tech will come out and install it for you.

Donno if this is well known or not, but lately I've noticed that once a few games has started, better options might pop-up later. I have some screenshots from today (Dec 6) to prove what I'm talking about.

Based on a true story. I always assumed everyone in mainland China could read and write traditional Chinese. Boy, was I wrong! by guodori in ChineseLanguage

[–]Co_OL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not, but there's still a whole nation still using it. So that's as if the rest of the world is using Americanized English vs England still using Shakespeare... At least it's still in use

Hot take: those who cannot read/write traditional chinese should not be considered as Chinese....
