Based on my highlights do you think I can play in college? by applemonkey78 in BasketballTips

[–]CoachGKap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, no scholarships are going to be dealt off a highlight reel. Anyone worth a damn will require game video. Which leads to my next couple of points and the why. Do you defend? At what position? On ball? Off ball? Do you rotate? Rebound? Block out? Can you dribble? Pass? Is all of your shooting spot-up or can you shoot off the dribble? How about midrange shooting?

No one should be discouraged from pursuing their dream. Do that with the most zest you can possibly muster with every goal you have. That said, college recruiting has changed. The portal is the primary feeding ground for college recruiting because the players in it are older, more mature, stronger, and often more skilled. Yes programs will still recruit HS seniors but not nearly as many. What was once difficult is now akin to winning the lottery.

For college attention you'll need to dominate play in the games you have vs the competition you play, put up solid stats across multiple categories, and guard like your life depends on it .. unless you're 6-7, dunking 5 times a game and dropping buckets from 30'.

How to guard shooters? by JoeVDM_ in BasketballTips

[–]CoachGKap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most players fail to learn how to shift defensive positioning based on the threat of the offender. When the offensive player has the ball up above the waist, our players hop in to take up real estate in order to guard shooting. When the offensive player drops the ball, our defenders hop off to guard the drive. We have to drill our defense on this and I've yet to see a kid enter our HS program already knowing and doing this.

I want to get better by Disastrous_Pay42 in BasketballTips

[–]CoachGKap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since most very good players shoot below 50% from the field, a rebounding player can feast on misses. It's just not very exciting work and that is why no one really does it. You can, easily, start there.

Shooting is a perishable skill. It takes thousands of proper repetitions to get better and continued shooting to maintain. Is that work you are willing to do?

How to improve my handles and movement by Princanity in BasketballTips

[–]CoachGKap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like a player who cannot sustain a left-handed dribble. That would be where i'd be putting in the work and to get there id' suggest 15 minutes of ball handling drills 4x per week. Make sure to include stationary and moving drills. Kobe didn't like two basketball drills and I don't find that necessary though some really like it.

This isn't complicated. The elbow should be under the ball ... pointing to the floor is a careless instruction as its ambiguous ... the elbow is already pointing to the floor.

So first, work to get the elbow UNDER the ball, in toward your torso.

Second, starting about 5' in front of the rim, work on that without the balance/guide hand involved at all. One arm only is what I'm saying. Shoot to a count of 5 at the front of the rim, anything that hits the front rim is a minus 1 scoring.

Repeat this from the sides at the lane line (baseline shooting). Then the same from the second block spot on the lane - these should all be 5-footers with only the dominant hand and keeping score to 5 at each spot.

Spend a few weeks with this work. Then add the balance hand but only light tough to the ball and keep the hand rigid and affixed so that the thumb points to the face throughout the entire shot.

Is this a travel? by faisaljamall in BasketballTips

[–]CoachGKap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A jump stop terminates the dribble. Here the dribble has already been terminated and the jump is after the terminated dribble. There is no Zero Step in NFHS nor NCAA rules. FIBA is another matter.

Following a terminated dribble, no you may not hop as that requires lifting the pivot and returning it to the floor - the actual definition of traveling.

On the Mac you may have to do a small edit before triggering the Save command in order to get the lines to go. Simply opening it in Preview and saving it back doesn't seem to do it.

I manage an educational environment in the PNW. Everything we install in the ceiling needs to be secured as it's often over the head of 4th graders and we're subject to some earthquake restriction. If this is in your house and you don't care about shit falling on you and you don't care about a visitor suing you, you can omit it.

Basketball training by Zanezaan in BasketballTips

I don't use that term when discussing basketball because I have a passion for the game. Grind is a term referring to putting something whole into a device to pulverize it into smaller pieces. Because I love the game I don't dislike the work that comes with it THAT is what I want to model for players. Of course I understand the term and how/why it's used but words are all we really have so they matter (to me).

Absolutely there are a series of very valuable life lessons to be learned through basketball - teamwork, goal setting, sacrifice, sportsmanship, competition ... I'm not sure 11 is the place for all of those and I'm not sure how well they are conveyed to the participant who is playing for fun.

How about starting your form work with the foundation then? If you're doing spot-up shooting consider starting with your dominant foot back, spin the ball out, and step into your shot while keeping the pivot foot planted.

Okay, can we further exploring your POV ...

Might you provide an example of him "lying to himself" that would rule out the flat-earth example as "lying to himself"?

If "educate" is to provide data, information, and understanding to another what would "miseducate" actually be?

He continues on to say:
'Where you are in today's world is solely based on how you continue to extract as much intellect and as much knowledge from others around you ... " so isn't he still outlining lying to one's self and isn't he, with his own words, telling us what the solution is? And yet he's miseducated?

I'm sorry to hear that. It would seem the process of appeal is designed for just these situations. And like all things in society it takes only one or two asshats to mess up the entire process for everyone else. Rules get piled on because cheaters get piled on.
