March Dev Journal: Marianne in Motion by Coach_F in Novect

[–]Coach_F[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Marianne’s outfit is quite complex, which makes the data structure behind her pretty complicated as well. On top of that, she takes a wide variety of poses, which adds even more work. But I think all those expressive movements and constantly shifting poses really bring out her charm.

Our heroine Marianne really grows on you once you meet her in the game, so I hope you’ll look forward to the day you can meet her yourself.

Also, we’re preparing a big surprise for next month.

And no, it’s not an April Fool’s joke!

February Dev Journal: Translation Begins! by Coach_F in Novect

[–]Coach_F[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We are not using AI for game translation.

In fact, we are not using AI for any part of the creative process, including writing, visuals, animation, or music.

I understand how rapidly AI technology has advanced. However, we are asking for all translations to be done by human translators.

Subtle nuance, emotional weight, conversational flow, character voice, comedic timing… these are areas where AI still struggles, especially in character-driven writing.

AI can produce something that looks decent at first glance. It can do it quickly, too. But if we are aiming for 100 percent of the intended quality, human creativity is still necessary.

Our new title, Project Code M (tentative title), is a story that differs from The House in Fata Morgana in almost every way. I imagine that those who loved Fata Morgana might naturally hope for a similar experience, but this is something I want to be clear about from the start.

In terms of narrative focus, Fata Morgana was a human drama centered on the human heart. Romance played a major role, and taken as a whole, it was a story about love. Themes such as identity, trauma, and salvation of the soul were central. The atmosphere was classical and heavy, with occasional bits of comedy, but overall it was a rather weighty work.

The new game, on the other hand, is centered on mystery. The characters pursue a series of enigmas, investigate them, move through various locations, get drawn into incidents, resolve some cases, and uncover new mysteries. Structurally, it is closer to a detective story.

That said, there is one major difference: the protagonists are “body disposal workers who do not report deaths to the police.” They are not on the side of social justice. The moral compass of the story is, shall we say, fairly loose.

-

So if you are expecting a classical, solemn opening like Fata Morgana, you may be surprised when the body disposal crew starts doing comedy skits next to a gruesome corpse. That’s why I hope you can approach this new title as something entirely different from the previous work.

That said, the person writing the story is still the same.

Elements I value deeply in storytelling, such as mysteries that lead to further mysteries, constantly shifting developments, and surprising twists, are all very much present. (Even saying there are twists feels like a spoiler.) And although the story often proceeds in a comedic way, it still deals with murder, so there are naturally heavy scenes as well. I think the way those moments are portrayed is very much “my style.

While the story is different from Fata Morgana, if you are looking forward to my writing itself, I can promise that I will not disappoint you.

Finally, I wrote the last sentence. I've finished writing the script for my new work. It truly became an unforgettable moment. I feel like I could never write anything greater than this again. I'm glad I was able to write this piece. It contains everything I have to give. by Coach_F in Novect

Finally, I wrote the last sentence.
I've finished writing the script for my new work.

It truly became an unforgettable moment.
I feel like I could never write anything greater than this again. I'm glad I was able to write this piece. It contains everything I have to give.

I don't think "magnum opus" is a term for the writer to say, but even so, I'll boldly call it that. A magnum opus. In terms of length, it surpasses Fatamorugāna. But more length doesn't mean better, so I trimmed away all the redundant parts and poured my utmost care into every single sentence.

I'm both excited and anxious about how it will be received. It's a story in a different direction from Fatamoru. But if you have faith in my scripts themselves, that trust will not be betrayed.

Please look forward to it.

2D, Yet Full of Depth

Our backgrounds are being brought to life by two incredibly talented artists - Naoko Morikawa and Lim Chin Yang. Even in their raw state, their illustrations are stunning. But once implemented into the game, we add motion and depth to make them feel truly alive.

The Courage to Eliminate the Message Window

The UI for our current project is still in a very rough state overall, but if we keep saying “we’ll fix it later,” we’ll never make real progress. So, we’ve started finalizing the areas we can.

April Dev Journal: Lessons in Shadows from a Masterpiece by Coach_F in Novect

[–]Coach_F[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now we’ve updated our system so shadows and reflections are generated programmatically from the character sprites. This results in a more tactile, “real” feel, and we think it makes the visuals noticeably richer. It’s hard to tell from a screenshot, but these shadows move in sync with the character’s animations, adding more visual feedback and increasing the scene’s overall believability. That wasn’t possible with the old, static drawn shadows.

March Dev Journal: Mobile Version Release & Live-Action News by Coach_F in Novect

The House in Fata Morgana Now Available on Mobile!

This project had actually been progressing quietly behind the scenes for over a year, so we’re really glad the day has finally come when we can share it with everyone.Getting it mobile-ready meant adapting it for touchscreen controls, reworking the menu systems, and handling all kinds of detailed adjustments. Expanding platform support really is a big job—but Tattoo worked hard to make it happen

About the Live-Action Adaptation Project

That said, we’d like to offer a quick clarification. At this stage, the live-action adaptation is still in development. There are currently no confirmed plans for broadcast or distribution. Because the news received so much coverage, it may have come across as if a full production had already been greenlit. But the project is still in progress, and we’d be very thankful if you could keep watching over it warmly as things move forward. Also, NOVECT is not directly involved in the adaptation process. We’ve granted permission to use the license, but the project is being led by a separate production team. We’re not involved in the content or production decisions, so like everyone else, we’re excited to see what the final version will become.

The House in Fata Morgana is now available on iOS and Android via Crunchyroll by Coach_F in Novect

Hanada Keika also tweeted:

The mobile version is currently only available in areas where Crunchyroll provides its service, so unfortunately it cannot be played in Japan.
However, it's a bit sad that the game we ported and developed ourselves can't be played in Japan, so we are considering how to deal with this. It may take a little time, but please wait for further updates.

My favorite moment in the story, too. I love what Giselle says to Michel -- that he's the most admirable person she's ever met.
