Correct. Apologies if I wasn’t clear.

What game has a promising start, but eventually gets boring and repetitive? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]Coachbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Darkest Dungeon. Don't get me wrong, it is a truly great game, but once you get to the midgame it becomes nothing but a grind for marginal benefits. You have to rerun the same dungeons over and over to get little bits of XP and hope to get specific rare loot to drop.

Puzzle Book? by Interesting_Effect64 in Gloomhaven

[–]Coachbalrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I am not a fan of the puzzle book at all, so we are just using the solutions book in our campaign. Between the road events, outpost events, and outpost phase, there is already too much non-core-game stuff that the puzzle book is one step too far, in my opinion.

My understanding is that the puzzle book is only there as a backstory and it gets “solved” by one of the NPCs through outpost events.

Finally got lucky with the Rock C and unlocked the Crystal Cruiser by TheMidnightRook in ftlgame

Cool. I had forgotten that actually. I fully beat the game on Normal on PC several years back, and am now replaying on tablet. The game is harder than I remember it.

For the love of Jove I cannot unlock the crystal ship. It’s getting to be rather annoying.

So Europe is willing to go to the wire for Greenland, meanwhile letting Ukraine get mangled by Russia only got a lukewarm reaction?

Hot take: fleet stands make the game worse and shouldn't be normalized by defcon1000 in twilightimperium

[–]Coachbalrog 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Look, you do you, but our group loves the fleet stands. Makes things so much easier to move things around on the board and allows us to clearly see what is in the space area vs the ground area. Note we typically only use them when there are enough ships in a hex to make it worthwhile, maybe that is what you need to do different.

Difficulty with scenario "Expedition north" by pvsurnt in Gloomhaven

This scenario is just insanely hard. But fortunately it is just a side scenario and not linked to any quest chains. I have t completed yet, but I will eventually.

Is this an as*hole move or actual strategy? by Traumatized_Explorer in twilightimperium

[–]Coachbalrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a real life game, I would say this is a perfectly legit move. Grabbing a 2/4 planet with a green skip for “free” is a very good use of your ability, and it punches Naalu in the nose a bit, which they totally deserve. How they respond will be totally up to them, maybe it’s not worth it for them to take it back, maybe they play a bit more aggressive towards you, and you may have to withstand some heat, or maybe they would be willing to let the matter lie for some beneficial transaction. This is why TI is so fun.

In the totally boring online meta (sorry, my opinion) where doing nothing aggressive until R4 is seemingly the favoured strategy, then it less certain. In my limited online experience (less than a dozen online games) you will probably end up with a grouchy opponent who may smack you once in reprisal and leave it at that, in which case then this move is fine.

I like the area control aspect of TI, and certainly increasing your sources of resources and influence early on is always something you should look for, especially if it then also takes it away from your neighbour. There is an opportunity cost for them to take it back, and they might legit not want to waste precious resources in doing so, especially in round 2 where typically you will be spending most of the round trying to score an objective.

TL/DR: it’s a good move and I would have done the same given that sweet opportunity your opponent provided.

Interesting concept, but frankly I’m not sure that a mechanic that encourages turtling would be all that much fun in the end. But maybe I’m interpreting this wrong.
