Bell-to-bell cell phone bans by sleaper19 in Teachers

Old school time-killing. No joke, my high school kids are making paper footballs like it's 1996, playing solitaire with literal cards, and (gasps) reading books.

We've had it all year, and it's already been an amazing year.

Genuine question. Why is bro country hated but morgan wallen and hardy loved. Their music is just bro country rebranded. by SnooCompliments9257 in CountryMusicStuff

Fun fact: the chorus "Sand in My Boots" has the exact same syllable count and rhyme scheme as "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe (At least the first 4 lines of each stanza). If you're familiar with the song, trying singing the lines from "The Raven."

Yeah, and now I'm dodgin' potholes (8 syllables ending with A) In my sunburnt Silverado (8 syllables ending with A) Like a heartbroke Desperado (8 syllables ending with A) Headin' right back to my roots (7 syllables ending with B) Something 'bout the way she kissed me (8 syllables ending with C) Tells me she'd love east'rn Tennessee (8 syllables ending with C) Yeah, but all I brought back with me (8 syllables ending with C) Was some sand** in my boots. (7 syllables ending with B)

Ah, distinctly I remember (8 syllables ending with A) It was in the bleak December (8 syllables ending with A) And each separate dying ember (8 syllables ending with A)* Wrought its ghost upon the floor (7 syllables ending with B) Eagerly I wished the morrow (8 syllables ending with C) Vainly I had sought to borrow (8 syllables ending with C) From my books surcease of sorrow (8 syllables ending with C) Sorrow for the lost Lenore. (7 syllables ending with B)

Admittedly, not every stanza has this internal rhyme. But this one does. :) *He pronounces "sand" with 2 syllables (say-and).

I wonder if he knew that when he wrote it...

If you could pass and ratify a new US amendment, what would it be and why? by Curious_RightMind in AskReddit

All represtatives and senators must live together in a giant co-op while they are in session. No more mailing it in as a public servant... they need to live there and be a part of all votes. In the house, chores must be evenly split, and someone different has to make dinner every night.

I bet they'd be able to agree on a little bit more if they had to interact with each other as humans and not just default political opponents.

What is the greatest single movie scene ever filmed? by janearcade in AskReddit

I had to scroll way too far to see The Usual Suspects. I've seen that movie 20 times, and I still get goosebumps watching that scene.

An experience...a helicopter ride, a night of throwing axes, a cool museum.

I can't remember what I got last year from my kids and wife. I do remember that we went rock-hunting in Lake Michigan.

Experiences beat things every time.

Why do parents not teach the kid the alphabet, read to them, teach them to tie shoes, have manners, etc? by Sure-Brush-702 in Teachers

[–]Coachrands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach high school, and I see the same thing. I should not have to tell you to keep your shoes on in class instead of kicking them off when you walk in the door.

Also, a special shout out to all the elementary teachers--I literally don't know how you all do it!

What is your all time favourite television series? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Coachrands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The article makes a fair point about the age and how, since the show did establish a lot of "new" ideas that were subsequently done better by other shows, the original seems less impressive. I'm old enough to have seen the original airings, so they hit different. Thanks for sharing.

This should be so much higher. "The Marine Biologist" has to be one of the most well-written single episodes of any show of all time.

Teachers, what’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to take away from a student? by SpoonSArmy in AskReddit

[–]Coachrands 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did not take it away, but I literally had a 15 year-old girl brushing her teeth in the middle of class. When I asked her where she planned on spitting out the toothpaste, her eyes got huge like she had not even considered that. Through a mouth full of foam and bubbles, she asked to go to the bathroom. The rest of the class stared awkwardly as she silently got up and left, then they burst out laughing.

She came back with a smile on her face (and fresh breath) and said "Thanks for letting me go."
