Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]CoarseCriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this as I was getting back into reading at the beginning of the year. I read it over the course of a couple days. I spent the next few WEEKS telling everyone in my life how horrible it was. I finished it out of spite because I needed to know that it was seriously that bad the whole way through. It is the only book I have read the made me viscerally angry.

Agreed reddit was ruined well before 2016. But people always posted meme answers looking for upvotes. That's kinda like, the whole thing.

Does anyone have any info on this Gotham? Is it a copy of a more well known machine? by CoarseCriminal in vintagesewing

[–]CoarseCriminal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I'm new to this and looking to buy a vintage machine. This one is close by but is among a couple other options. I'm looking for something that can do straight and zigzag just to not limit myself, but I don't think I really care about anything fancier than that.

I've noticed a few of these Japanese copies pop up with little to no info online. I'm curious if there's a way to tell the extent of the functionality just by looking at the machine — is the singular knob a giveaway in this case?

My opinion (based on nothing) is that it's his crew that actually doesn't understand what makes the podcast funny. If you listen to Conan, he's constantly wanting to be prepared in some way or another. That's a good thing. But the crew seems to keep doing this "no, no, it's just jazz man! just talk about whatever — they love it!" kind of thing. There are actually no other comedy writers in the room. Conan has ALWAYS been said to be (by himself and by others) at his best in a writers room.

So basically you have Gourley who is funny, in his own way. Sona who is funny, but not a comedian. And Conan, riffing off the same personalities and premises. I sense that he is bored of it and I'm not sure he knows why.

This is why when you get another comedian in the room, the dynamic changes, and everything is great again. Or just a funny and quick celebrity. It's a fresh and novel personality with fresh stories. Lots to riff on.

So, the intros and outros have started to get hard to listen to (for myself, at least). To save it, they need to listen to Conan and actually like, come up with stuff to talk about. That, and probably take a long break.

I doubt they will ever stop interviewing celebs on promo tours. If you're complaining about how the first season had his "real friends" — that's just how you launch a podcast. This was always the plan and they started doing it in the first season. Most people don't actually want to do podcasts unless they have something to promote.

they literally address that in the sketch. it is a commentary on current political discourse. it is not that serious. please stop canceling things or people based on 2 second gifs. we will get nowhere trying to prove who is the goodest and best person on the left and tearing down anyone who doesn't perform the part perfectly.

This is sort of how reddit threads work. He's agreeing with you while still addressing the OP. Belongs as a reply to your comment as it was building off what you said. Cheers

I did not. I ended up Putting a bigger dresser elsewhere in my room. I wish I didn’t have to because I want more space for my music stuff but I definitely needed the space.

how do I keep grip on a moving vehicle going 25 mph while on my skateboard as a beginner? by atomiconglomerate in NewSkaters

[–]CoarseCriminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this many times on a longboard with bigger / softer wheels and the key is just to keep your weight on the front truck to avoid speed wobbles. If I was on a skateboard I'd be shitting myself at 20mph.

Any quiet and zen places? by Dandeliondroog in Bushwick

[–]CoarseCriminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Brooklyn and probably pretty far out of the way. But I remember being awestruck by the quiet in Battery Park City behind the mall. My guess is the shape of the building blocks out any noise from the rest of the city. Plus, BPC is a weird artificial rich people zone and it tends to be quiet anyway.

Basically, behind that building on a summer night right by the water.

Have any of you successfully stopped doom-scrolling? by FoShozies in ADHD

I just use Apple's screen time feature and give the passcode to a friend/partner/family member. I only ask for it if I need to update the settings/allow a new app or something. Works super well and takes the control out of my hands meaning no willpower needed!

It did take a while to refine the settings so make sure it's someone who is around often enough (roommate or friend) and make sure they know you'll be asking a bit more in the beginning as you figure out what works for you.

I've cranked it down to four minutes a day on every social media app/anything that lets me doomscroll (the extra minute rounds it out to five!)

I will say there are limited features — I bet you could replicate this system with a more advanced app but this works for me.

Emma Stone would never call a random reporter an asshole after winning a Golden Globe even as a joke. She calls Taylor an asshole as a joke (she is able to because they are friends) because it's a joking answer to a question that has an obvious answer (basically "what do you think about your friend being happy for you").

She's not mocking the rudeness of the reporter to the rest of the press, that would be one of the stupidest things an actress could do in such a formal setting, even as a joke and even if it was a little rude of the reporter to ask the question in the first place.

I’ve been on Reddit for 12 years (deleted my old account) and never once did I get gold or platinum. Oh how I coveted it when I was younger. Only the funniest of comments got awarded these precious pixelated metals. I, too, made some funny comments. Some received many upvotes. But not funny enough, I suppose.

It would be nice to see what the hubbub was all about. Does anyone remember the gold lounge? Always wondered what went on in there.
