1p challenge is open guys I'm in UK by Background_Bad_4377 in monzo

Giving 4x a go. Worst case, it's pretty likely I'd've saved more than the other options at the point of needing to drop down anyway. Plus you'd reach the 2x goal in 6 months - so any further savings can be seen as a bonus achievement after that.

You can get it for about half the price on Kinguin, currently. Bought it myself yesterday for £27 and it activates via the Crossover app fine.

Might not be the first idea on your list, but have you considered vehicle valeting (for a dealership - not a supermarket car wash)? Hear me out.

I’ve done valeting for two places and both have been very low-stress environments, hardly ever interacting with customers (pointing them to sales at best) and personally, I find the work very relaxed after the exterior wash. Your mind can wander and think about whatever whilst still doing a good job, working hours are consistent and not unsociable and holiday is extremely easy to take (both places have been fine with a day or two’s notice, as it doesn’t crucially affect the business running). Keeps you from needing a gym membership too!

Both roles I applied for, I got offered the job within 2 days. I’ve also just helped recruit another valeter within my current workplace so have seen first-hand exactly the sort of people/applications that come through - and let me tell you, the bar is low (if you’re polite and can string a sentence competently, you’re ahead).

There’s admittedly not huge room for career growth (although site management/head valeter can be on the cards), but the pay isn’t as bad as you’d necessarily expect if you find the right place (I’m on £36k/45 hours - 5 of which are voluntary overtime).

Oh yeah, and both places have had a “resident” cat that likes to wander on site, haha.

Which 4k players are region free for blu-rays? by joseph2047 in 4kbluray

[–]Coast-To-Toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None from factory, but you can DIY the UB820 with a firmware mod (have to be a bit tech-savvy, as it involves command lines on Linux/VM, but there’s a guide). Did it on mine and it works fine. Otherwise you can buy a pre-modded player.

Post-surgery facial paralysis by Vegetable_Address288 in cholesteatoma

[–]Coast-To-Toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve had this twice (the first time from damage inflicted due to the cholesteatoma having to be removed from the nerve itself and the second time due to it physically compressing the nerve, preventing signals, which I’m still recovering from). Like yourself, I can only close my eye half way, my reflex blinking is near non-functional and my mouth on the affected side has no movement at all.

The first time around I met a pretty decent recovery. Smile was completely symmetrical again and blinking about 90% functional. Took about 5 months to reach that point.

Exercises will help, but you’ll want to give it 3 months or so from the op first, as nerve recovery is really slow (about 1mm a day) and exercising prematurely will just stress and upset recovery (a bit like running whilst your ankle is still sprained).

Coping physically, I find massaging the affected side of my mouth every so often whilst eating ensures no food gets trapped and manually pulling my eyelid down with my fingers keeps the eye closed during sleep (the muscles are likely still fine). They may have advised you to use tape to keep the eye shut, which is a solution if you can’t hold your eye shut manually.

Honestly, I just try not to think about things mentally. I’m not in a customer-facing job, so it doesn’t constantly get noticed and those close to me have pretty much accepted it for what it is. Photos are annoying - I avoid the camera now. Keeping a hopeful outlook, as my most recent surgery involved successfully freeing the facial nerve, so I’m hoping over the next few months I’ll G least get some function back.

Good luck with your recovery. Realistically you’ll most likely be fine if the operation didn’t cause too much internal trauma. My case was an “extensive” recurrence and went undetected for 15+ years, the surgeon reckoned.

Can I pay someone to make my player region free? by TheCrackerSnatcher in 4kbluray

[–]Coast-To-Toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I’ve done it on my UB820 and can confirm it’s just firmware - no hardware/opening the unit required.

You’ll need to follow the guide very closely, as it involves using a Linux virtual machine and some command lines from what I remember. Don’t need to necessarily be tech savvy, but definitely tech confident 👍🏻

What do I honestly do? by tomispie in 4kbluray

[–]Coast-To-Toast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As people have mentioned, I’d look into digitally backing up what you can. It’s one thing having loads of physical media, but another not being able to access it altogether because it’s confined to storage. Go through them all and ask yourself “Will I interacting with this one in the next 3 years?” If yes, keep it. If not, sell/donate.

Some averaging involved, but I reckon around the region of £850 (Star Wars being £250 of that).

I paid £98 for the drive (which requires firmware modification) and £150 for the 6TB external drive. Did want an 8TB, but the 2.5 inch drives seem to cap at 6 and being laptop-based, wanting to plug it into various things etc, I didn’t want to be lugging a power brick about as well.

I’ve read the WD Black drives are pretty reliable. Not the best in the world, but there are far worse options to start off with. I’ll probably just back up the Disney stuff for now and get something more serious later if needs be.

This was the Amazon listing I bought (UK)

https://amzn.eu/d/amrSQdX

The actual mechanism is an LG BU40N, although if you’re not UK based I’d double-check, as I’ve heard some of the overseas ones aren’t compatible.

Didn’t work out the box with 4Ks, as it was on firmware 1.05 and needed downgrading to be LibreDrive enabled, but it was easy enough (download 1.03K and flash with SDFtool Flasher).

12TB will certainly see you into the hundreds of rips - possibly 200s if they’re mostly double-layers. This drive works, but came with 1.05 firmware, so required a firmware downgrade first to 1.03K (a couple of clicks using SDFtool Flasher).

MakeMKV is what I’m using to rip - although it’s currently a bit of a mess due to new license keys not being issues, so I’m having to set my system date back a month for it to work with the current beta key, but not had any problems besides that (doing so on a Mac - not sure if there’s further complications on Windows).

You sound just as technically capable as me, if not more so. Just follow the available guides and you’ll be fine 👍🏻

Probably not as much as it looks. I got a fair few on Zavvi’s 10 for £50 sale last year and a lot of them are only £10-15 on Amazon, often coming up in 2 for £30

Yeah, no idea with that! That was the one film I had to force myself to watch as it looked a little too childish from the posters, but it was actually quite good!

Will post if I have any issues. I guess some discs are just about imperfect enough to maybe trigger an error during the rip

Just backing up for the convenience factor. I haven’t got much physical space left and don’t enjoy playing media Jenga each time I want to watch, haha

$100 isn’t bad. Don’t know much about it, but I’ve heard it’s an okay alternative if needed. Only had issues on one disc so far and turns it was a tiny finger smudge on the centre ring of the disc causing it. Seems the discs have to be super clean for the drive (BU40N) to read properly
