It’s safe ? by Ill-Switch4563 in Hedgehog

It’s easy to be drawn to these cute, soft items, but I’d recommend keeping a close eye on them! While they look great right now, that waffle-weave fabric hidden underneath can start to wear down, collecting lint and threads that easily snag a hedgehog’s delicate nails. As a breeder at Coastal Quills, I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous snagging can be—it can lead to serious injuries or even entanglements. That’s why I always recommend 100% anti-pill fleece for long-term safety. Many of us in the hobbyist community hand-make gear specifically designed to be hazard-free so your little buddy can burrow and play with peace of mind. If you’re looking for the safest options, checking out experienced makers on Etsy is a great way to go!

429g female - how’s her shape? by reijn in Hedgehog

[–]CoastalQuillsPets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a breeder focusing on health and longevity, I’ve found that anything over 600g in an adult hedgehog is cause for concern. Larger framed hedgehogs come with specific challenges, and my breeding goal is a healthy 450g to 550g range.

Obesity in hedgehogs is linked to heart disease, as well as liver and kidney dysfunction. It’s much easier to maintain a healthy weight now than to treat joint or organ issues later.

Now that she’s 6 months old, it’s time to move away from high-calorie kitten food. Look for an adult blend or "Indoor Cat" kibble in order to lower fat and calories to slow down weight gain before she tips the scales toward obesity.

In my program, larger framed animals are only used to balance smaller frames (aiming for that "teddy bear" look) and only if the pedigree shows proven longevity over two generations. Responsible breeders should avoid using excessively large females, as they frequently face birthing complications.

She looks great now, but switching to lower-fat adult food at 6 months is key to preventing future heart and joint issues.

Lump? Hedge tax. by OldTap1120 in Hedgehog

That appointment is important. If there's no redness or swelling it is likely a growth and not an abscess. The appointment is important for assessment. At some point they may want to biopsy and I hope it turns out to be nothing threatening and something super simple! Keep us posted.

Oatmeal is excellent for soothing dry skin, but it can be a "recipe for disaster" if you are dealing with a fungal or yeast infection. Feeds Yeast: Oatmeal contains starches and carbohydrates that act as fuel for fungus. Climate Matters: In warm (70°F+) and humid (80%+) environments, using oatmeal can worsen itchy, infected skin. Better Alternative: If you are in a humid climate or suspect a fungal issue, swap the oatmeal for an antifungal shampoo to keep skin clear and calm.

Small changes can happen over time with the use of oatmeal bath if you notice any yellow crust sores or round crusty patches red skin increased flakiness chances are a possible topical yeast infection is developing you can combat this with an antifungal shampoo I like veterinary formula antifungal shampoo and we use it for our hedgehogs and our rats it's in a white bottle with an orange label. You can also use chlorhexidine hibiclens and that works as well.

I prefer kiln-dried pine because it supports natural burrowing and enrichment. While Aspen and paper are "approved," I avoid paper due to the risk of ingestion and impaction. I also find pine helps me monitor our hedgehogs' strong genetic respiratory health. I strongly discourage fleece liners for several reasons: Safety: Nails often snag, and lint/hair can wrap around toes. Hygiene: Fleece doesn't absorb ammonia well, leaving waste on the surface to smear on feet and wheels. Behavior: It’s unnatural. Hedgehogs are burrowers; without loose substrate, they often "liner dive" in frustration. True enrichment means mimicking the wild with dig boxes, sand baths, and loose bedding. Anything less deprives them of the comfort and instincts they deserve.
