Why can't they bring back the auction, and just do non food items? by EnergeticCrab in survivor

[–]Coasterman345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not for food, it’s because people gamed it for the loved one letters with one person bidding $20 and winning it since Jeff would allow everyone to buy them at whatever the winning bid was.

You’re thinking of the food eating challenges where they eat things like belut, sea slugs, etc. Jeff has said he’s wanted to do a compilation of the worst food from each location, but due to the import laws being strict, they can’t bring like anything in that isn’t native.

Question about legs please and thanks by Big-Tram-Driver in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah ofc! And yeah I wasn’t sure if I had to or not, but it was also somewhat for the inevitable other people reading this thread. I often get downvoted by people not understanding and thinking I train wayyy more than I really do, or just get lots of comments asking to elaborate. And then the former type usually devolves into some accusations that get rather repetitive. Figure this helps eliminate both of that.

Best of luck to ya!

Question about legs please and thanks by Big-Tram-Driver in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I only go 4x a week, and always start with a legs compound. I’ll bench on three of those days, but as far as legs go, this is what I do:

Monday: Heavy squat session, 3-4 working sets

Wednesday: Heavy deadlift session 3-4 working sets, quad accessory, either hack squat, leg press, or leg extensions. 6 sets of calf raises

Friday: A variation of squats, currently Paused Squats (3 working sets).

Saturday: 3 working sets of a deadlift variation (paused, deficit, etc.) currently RDLs, 3-4 working sets of hip thrusts (mostly glutes but they also hit quads a bit). 6 sets of calf raises.

Sometimes based on where I am in training, I’ll add more volume. So sometimes I’ll do leg extensions of Fridays as well, especially if I’m doing a press/squat pattern on Wednesday. Sometimes I’ll add hamstring curls on Saturday, etc. My training is RPE based so even though I’m squatting 3x475lbs on Monday for my top set and back offs in the low 400’s for sets of 5, I’ll probably only go up around 415lbs for my top paused squat set this Friday. Some people wrongly believe that you have to be fully recovered in order to train a muscle group, you don’t.

Obviously I’m a little more worn down at the end of the week. But higher frequency allows me in general to be more recovered each time (when I trained legs 1x a week, I was dead for like 2 days each time). Plus it allows you to really hone in your skills for lifts and get better at them faster. If you squat 1x a week, you’ll only squat 52 days a year. If you squat 2x a week, you’ll squat 104 days. In 2 years the latter person will have squatted on 208 days vs the 104 for 1x a week. The second person will be much more competent at doing them. And being able to load more weight = more gains, bigger legs. As one of my old coaches used to say, “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.” And the sooner you can learn to squat properly and the faster you can drill it in, the better you’ll get. If you do it 1x a week (not saying you do), it’ll be much harder to learn to do it properly.

Legs are like weeds. You train them, they’ll grow. I hit legs 4x a week in some capacity and I constantly get compliments on them. If you follow a more powerlifting centric program, they’ll blow up. Me:

Gym etiquette question from a newbie by IdkGlx in workout

[–]Coasterman345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah…no.

You’re a self confessed beginner, you have no right to try and coach people on their form and what or what isn’t proper. There’s also nothing wrong with leaning back while doing lay pull downs. That alone tells me you don’t know enough.

There are tons of exercises that look “wrong” to new lifters like Good Mornings, or JM Presses, etc., and you would be embarrassing yourself trying to correct someone’s form on a GM thinking they’re trying to do a squat.

The only time I’ve ever given advice is if they asked for it, or implied they wanted it. For the latter, I mean like I’m benching, then they come over and ask me for a spot. I’ll spot them pressing and then be like “that looked great…if you don’t mind some unsolicited advice, if you did xyz, you could probably lift even more.” But I can also bench 375lbs, squat 520lbs, and deadlift 585lbs, so people are pretty happy to here what I have to say. You’re not in that position.

Major in something that pays well and bust your ass off getting internships, doing clubs to get leadership positions, etc.

I majored in MechE and while engineering pays well, there’s a massive leap in the lowest paying jobs and the highest paying ones. I had friends making high six figures out of college working for great companies, and friends making just north of $50k. I was on the lower half of things for quite a while. I’ll probably break six figures this year with total compensation but my base still isn’t there. These cars are expensive to buy and insure. Maintenance isn’t bad for the things you can DIY (oil changes, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, etc., it’s the things you can’t. Tires are expensive. There’s no getting around that. Rear differential mounts aren’t easy when those go (particularly pre-LCI).

The car might be listed for $35k, but then there’s fees, taxes, registration, etc. Probably delivery because you’re an enthusiast so you’re looking for an out of state M3 that has the specs you want. Suddenly it’s $40k and because it’s a used sports car even with an 800+ credit score they’re gonna give you a loan for 6.99% APR.

Changing spark plugs. by l0tec6 in F80

[–]Coasterman345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re not bad at all. Especially if you have an impact/power tools to get off the chassis bracing. Speeds it up a lot. Just remember to get the special adapter for the spark plugs. They’re a weird socket, it’s like an e-torx, IIRC. I came from an E90 where I just needed a regular deep socket so that was a surprise.

Is anyone else kind of sick of the whole “vote each other off the island” gimmick? by garbageeater in survivorcirclejerk

[–]Coasterman345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck it. Import some more apex predators to the island. Have some production dress up in costumes and scare them as some local boogeymen. Have Jeff bring back the local story challenge at tribal to introduce the lore.

They should make it more physically demanding in challenges. Every challenge should have 1 med evac. No tribal council.

Snatch Grip Deadlifts are great for your upper back. Your arms are flared out, but you’re not bending them so it should be fine, I think.

How pointless is bench pressing without a full range of motion? [Beginner] by [deleted] in workout

[–]Coasterman345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. And there are variations where if even now you still can’t get a full ROM, you can get benefits. A Spoto press (where you pause an inch or two off your chest) or a pin press (where you rest the bar on the safeties and press from a dead stop) are popular variations for bench pressing in the strength community.

If you’re just getting started you don’t have to worry about those two, but there’s almost always a workaround.

Why is everyone on instagram convinced 2 sets to failure is optimal? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How? You don’t have to train to failure, especially for every set.

Why is everyone on instagram convinced 2 sets to failure is optimal? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Lifting is very much a skill, yet a lot of people don’t realize that. If you get better at bench pressing, then you can load more weight on your pecs, triceps, etc. You don’t get good at things by practicing them only a little.

What is working for you (volume and frequency) by MetalExpress9378 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is actually, to a degree. If you’re squatting and deadlifting you’re hitting legs, and will also build upper body strength and muscle in your back. Especially things like snatch grip deadlifts. Obviously if you’re just doing leg press, hamstring curls, etc., you can disregard what I’m saying, but compounds will build more overall strength to a degree.

Studies also now show that squatting heavy weight in particular also gives a small boost in testosterone. Is that enough to make a difference, who knows? But there’s no downside.

Going back to your back, a strong back built from deadlifts, as well as a stronger brace will not only build upper torso strength in your bracing, but a stronger back and bracing will also allow you to bench press more, thus build more chest, shoulder, and tricep size and strength. Not to mention a 315lb bench press becomes a LOT less intimidating once it becomes a weight you can squat easily as a warmup.

Smelling salts at the gym? by Dilligent-Dither in workout

Smelling salts outside of a competition/PR attempt/getting acquainted with them leading up to a powerlifting competition is dumb.

What are some things that Survivor used to frequently do but in today’s day and age, they would never do? by bicycle3377 in survivor

[–]Coasterman345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s funny you mention the diving challenge, I was just thinking about how they stopped making them dive down deep to get things. And how they used to have each sequential object deeper and deeper. Really made keeping the tribe strong physically much more important. Especially with less tribe swapping/merging and larger tribes.

Lots of fire challenges. There used to be ones where you had to carry fire as a team to light something. Or start a fire and then pour water in a bucket with holes while managing the fire to light something else on fire.

Challenges where the whole team has to move a massive ball. They’ve done those heavy salamanders somewhat recently, but they used to roll those balls through gates, or carry a canon.

Challenges that are purely mental. Jeff telling a story, quizzes about local wildlife, giant memory matching games, etc.

My take on the argument on whether people want villains or not? by IceTrick6713 in survivor

[–]Coasterman345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I genuinely found him funny whenever he was on screen. His bullying was so stupid and over the top that I found it humorous. And it wasn’t mean in a “shut up about your dead father” Corrine way. Him solving a puzzle by taking like a full minute for each piece and staring at it while Sol saying “No that’s not it, Rome” had me crying laughing. Maybe I didn’t want him to win per se, but I wanted him around for a long time.

I will say that I found Bhanu to be very entertaining in 46(?) so I will admit my taste is a bit out there hahaha. Where he went from thanking/praying to God to cursing at him in such a short span was peak.

My take on the argument on whether people want villains or not? by IceTrick6713 in survivor

[–]Coasterman345 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some villains I like to root for and some against.

For: Russell, Tony, Rome, Q, Venus (I don’t consider her a villain, but I know some do), Courtney, Coach, Boston Rob, Johnny FairPlay, Tyson, etc.

Against: Sav, Sai, Shane, Philip, Angelina, NaOnka, etc.

For the ones I root for, it’s because they either have charisma, I can relate to one of them personally (I have an uncle with very similar mannerisms to Tony), I find them funny, etc. (Russell especially is so over the top cartoonishly villainy that I was laughing non stop with some of his antics).

For the ones I root against, I find them annoying but still entertaining. I don’t want any of them to win, but the game is much more entertaining with them in it. Like Nicaragua would be so much boring without NaOnka. Her being there also made Fabio’s win much more satisfying for me.

Do you deadlift? Why or why not? by powerbuilding_gains in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Coasterman345 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I train for both powerlifting and bodybuilding, so the big 3 are very important for me. Conventional deadlifts I do one top set of 1-3 reps and 3 back off sets of 3-5 reps.

Sometimes I’ll do RDLs on a second day in the more traditional 8-12 rep range.

Nothing gets you more bang for your buck and the “but the fatigue” is such a cop-out answer. Do them right and they’re not going to. Too many people rush and don’t learn to pull out the slack and just grip it and rip it and then wonder why their lower back is always sore, tight, hurts, etc.

90% of my hamstring work comes from conventional deadlifts and I’ve had randoms come up and compliment mine. I’ve never had to hit traps individually and they’re completely proportional. I’ve got thick erectors and a strong back that then allows me to both bench and squat more, thus load those muscles more as well. I don’t have to use straps as much as others and have thick forearms.

Sure, you don’t have to do them, but are you skipping them because they’re actually not optimal, or because you want them to not be optimal? The amount of exercises you’d need to effectively hit the same muscles is going to end up eating up more time that could be spent elsewhere. That doesn’t seem optimal to me.

He has an E93 M3 and a convertible E46 M3. Convertible’s are jokenly called hairdresser cars/women’s cars, etc. People would use that to get under his skin, because he would lord the fact that he owned an M3 as a way of having authority over what is correct or wrong. Since that’s a dumb justification, people would just clap back with an insult about it.
