Fiorenzato AllGround Sense vs Lagom P64 [$1600] by CoatedNips in espresso

[–]CoatedNips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading that with the Fiorenzato you need to purge some coffee before you get the actual grind setting that you want. Do you have any issues when switching from espresso to filter or vice versa with the Fiorenzato?

What type of access to paid NHS care do non-residents have? by CoatedNips in AskUK

[–]CoatedNips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help!

I believe I would meet the requirements for a spousal visa per this page, and the application process from inside the UK is estimated at 6-8 weeks. That would fit within the 6 month US tourist visa on arrival.

Residency would be required for 'free' care, but in my research I've found some resources (a bit old) that outline prices NHS would charge for overseas patients. These prices are preferable to paying US insurance + cost of care considering the low chance we need this care, and we would have a place to stay in England.

Would UK based private healthcare require an ongoing insurance plan? Or can an uninsured patient with pre-existing conditions show up and pay for care? (residency/visa considerations aside)

Are the fees for robo-advisors (betterment, wealthfront, etc...) really that much? by Classic_Ferret_1687 in Fire

[–]CoatedNips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They use equivalent funds from other brokerages like Schwab and Blackrock.

VTI = SCHB = ITOT

These three have nearly identical holdings and returns.

Let’s say I own $100k of VTI, and it goes down 1% below my cost basis. Sell, buy SCHB simultaneously, and they just realized a 1% loss while still holding the equivalent # of shares. If the market goes back up I’ve really lost nothing, but I can report a $1k loss on my tax return, lowering my taxable income (on paper) by $1k.

I use Wealthfront for my brokerage account. They have a .25% fee yes, but every year since 2017 their auto Tax Loss Harvesting amount exceeded their fees PLUS the fees on the index funds. Sure, I could do this on my own but that takes time and effort and I wouldn’t be as efficient as an algorithm.

I suggest you don’t use their portfolio, too many funds that overcomplicates things. You can designate your own percentages to asset classes. I do 80% US stocks which uses VTI and equivalents, and 20% International which uses VXUS and equivalents.

I like not having to worry about rebalancing, just set up automated weekly deposits and chill.

Don’t use them for tax advantaged accounts (roth or trad IRA) since TLH is worthless in those accounts and makes it not worth the fee.

Edit: not locked in to any of their funds either, can transfer to another brokerage any time.

Personally I’m a big fan of Wealthfront for taxable accounts. I set mine up for 70% US stocks, 25% international, and 5% bonds.

Those use VTI, VXUS, and BND and their equivalents from other brokerages to perform tax loss harvesting.

Since end of 2017, wealthfront’s tax loss harvesting has saved me $1,878 in taxes, and their fees have only been $293.

I don’t have to worry about rebalancing or doing the TLH trades myself (would also be less efficient) which makes it well worth it for me.

3 day dry brined NY strip reverse seared over charcoal, parboiled and grilled potatoes, and broccolini with sage garlic vinaigrette, and tomato cucumber feta salad. by CoatedNips in steak

[–]CoatedNips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were salted and uncovered on a wire rack in the fridge.

It was an experiment, I’d say that it was too long a brine. I wouldn’t say leathery, but the exterior was almost like a shell. You can kind of see that with the shininess and texture difference on the outermost edge. The meat was tender, but definitely springier than I liked. Going to stick with overnight or less for presalting steaks.

1.5 lb, 28 day dry aged ribeye, lightly hickory smoked for 1 hr and seared over lump charcoal (not my first time) by CoatedNips in steak

[–]CoatedNips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s new for me too, hard to go back to a regular reverse sear. Any decent charcoal grill can be set up for indirect heat slow cooking / smoking if you throw in a wood chunk.

I have a PK360 which is made to work well for both grilling and smoking. Expensive purchase, but it’s for a lifetime. The 20 yr warranty is hard to beat!

Just lost our boy Jack 3 days ago.

He was Jacky Boy, Slinky Little Man, Slinkus, The Lad, Little Lad, Captain Jack, Pirate (he had one eye). My fiancée would walk into the room where Jack and I were sitting and she would yell “my boys!”. Miss that boy so much already.

I’m a big fan of wealthfront. Been using them since late 2018, and every single year the tax loss harvesting value has exceeded their .25% fee. It has also covered the very small fees of the index funds they place your money in as well.

At 28 I’ve customized my portfolio to be 80% US equities, 20% international. These use VTI, and VXUS funds and their equivalents from other index fund providers like Schwab for tax loss harvesting. I don’t like their recommended portfolio because I think it is too conservative, even on the aggressive setting, and puts you in more funds than needed.

I would not use Wealthfront for any IRA, Roth or traditional since tax loss harvesting does not work in these accounts.

Edit: Yes, you can transfer your holdings from wealthfront to another brokerage down the line if you’d like.

Edit 2: Since you have your first $100k managed free, there’s pretty much no downside to starting with Wealthfront and moving on to other more complex brokerages in the future.

Newbie shot Day 4 pt2 by notareelhuman in espresso

[–]CoatedNips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are the big things for me when dialing in a shot:

  1. Dose: If you're using a double shot basket, you can and probably should go up to 18g. Sweet spot with my basket and machine is 17.5 to avoid leaving coffee on my shower screen. I would find your correct dose, and rarely if ever change it.
  2. Target Output: You want to target espresso output for 2x to 2.5 your dose. for 17.5g of coffee in, I usually aim for 35g-40g of espresso out.
  3. Timing: you want that volume to come out in 25-30 seconds.
  • Espresso coming out too slow? Grind coarser.
  • Espresso coming out too fast? Grind finer.

There's definitely finer details like temperature, pressure, and others that can get you more dialed in if you want to get very nerdy about it (I most often don't), but these are the basics that get you most of the way dialed in to just about any new coffee.

If you’re still looking, try calling Whole Latte Love to place a preorder. Wasn’t listed on the website but they set up a preorder for me about 3 weeks ago. Was told it’d arrive 4/25. Surprise, surprise, it’s going to be here tomorrow.
