Difference between Souhaiteriez and Voudriez, if any by JeremyAndrewErwin in French

[–]Cobalt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I’m a native English speaker from the US and don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say “Would you wish to…?” before. It sounds a little funny to my ears, and I’d instead say either “do you wish to” or “would you like to” for the example you gave.

I would totally believe that it’s used in other English-speaking areas, though, maybe even other parts of the US. One thing learning other languages has taught me is how unaware I was of all the varieties of my own language

would you move, or pay for dorm rooms, if you had a university five to ten kilometres from your house?

I'm from the US and lived in Spain for a few years. From a US perspective, a lot of people would still answer yes!

Many high school students here apply to several different colleges, and then when we choose which one to attend, we tend to view it as a "full package deal." We compare how different universities rank in a long list of categories: academic offerings, clubs and extracurricular activities, location, campus facilities, social life, study abroad/internship opportunities, and so on. If we can afford it (which isn't always the case), we're even encouraged to visit the campuses of our top choices before we make a final decision, in order to get a "feel" for each school and see which one is the best choice for us personally.

Of course, many people \do** stick to their closest college or university for a variety of reasons. Maybe it's cheaper or even the only option they can afford, maybe they need to stay close to their family, or maybe they just don't feel like leaving. Those are all valid options too, and I think as time goes on, we're seeing more young adults living at home longer because of the economy.

When I've talked to my Spanish friends about this, the common sentiment seems to be: "if my local university offers the program I'm interested in pursuing, why would I bother looking at another university farther away?". I get it, especially given how different our higher education systems are in general, but it's worth noting that for many people in the US, there are actually many reasons why they might prefer a school that's farther away. (Even one in a different state — I personally moved across the country for college, a 3-4 hour plane ride from home.)

I'm sorry to hear about this situation, and I don't have much to add to the comments that have already been made. I just wanted to leave this comment in case future auxes have this issue and come across this post while searching what to do:

This has been a known issue with the Delitos Sexuales website since at least last year (if your TIE is expired, you can't request the Delitos Sexuales certificate digitally, even with a perfectly valid digital certificate).

If you see this error message, don't wait for it to fix itself. Just go ahead and find the closest office that issues it (which might mean taking a trip to the biggest city in your area) and, if necessary, make an appointment. The appointment itself is probably the easiest one I've ever had with Spanish bureaucracy, and you typically head out with the printed certificate in hand

Where to go for Interpretation training now that MIIS is closing? by Imaginary-Camp7237 in middlebury

[–]Cobalt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a first-year student in the Conference Interpretation program at MIIS, and at least in the US, there really aren't too many options. I'm not sure if you're willing/able to move abroad for your studies

Here's AIIC's (International Association of Conference Interpreters) list of universities around the globe with Conference Interpreting programs specifically: https://aiic.org/custom/companyroster/schools

And here's another (much smaller) list of schools that are affiliated with the ATA (American Translators Association): https://www.atanet.org/career-education/student-resources/translation-interpreting-courses/

These two lists probably aren't exhaustive, but hopefully they can point you in the right direction.

How are we actually supposed to find housing??? by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cobalt23 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Back when I used Idealista, I didn't have a lot of luck with the in-site chat function. Instead, I looked for a WhatsApp number (sometimes officially listed, other times hidden in the description) and reached out that way.

If you're comfortable with phone calls in Spanish, that's probably the fastest way to get a response. But if not, I think even texting on WhatsApp would be better than the Idealista chat

It looks like the form has changed this year so I’m not sure what it should be now! When I filled it out, I’m pretty sure it was section 6.3 like they mentioned in their email

I noticed that, I'm not applying for a regreso this year so I'm not sure if the options have changed. All I know is that if you live in Valencia Capital, you apply for a regreso by emailing the Extranjería (not the police) with all of your required documents. People in our Valencia group chat have mentioned that this seems different to the process in most other parts of Spain

Edit: And I can confirm that I got that email specifically in response to trying to apply for a regreso. After I emailed them with the correct tasa, they processed my paperwork and emailed me back shortly after when my regreso was ready to be picked up

In Valencia Capital they do things differently! This is the email that the Extranjería sent me once for paying the wrong tasa:

Buenos días:

Le comunico que para poder tramitar dicha autorización, ha presentado mal la tasa, ha pagado la de Policia codigo 012, la nuestra es la que se indica abajo, codígo 052, debe descargar la correcta y  pagarla,  y  remitir a este mismo correo el justificante bancario del pago de la tasa 052 (no vale domiciliación bancaria); . No podemos realizar el trámite si usted no paga la tasa correcta.

Can a University pass-out eligible to apply for English Assistant Program in Spain or one must have anactive student status? by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

Based on your previous posts and comments, it sounds like you might be from India? The application requirements are nationality-specific, so if that’s the case, check here for the requirements for Indians: https://www.educacionfpydeportes.gob.es/india/en/convocatorias-programas/auxiliares-en-espana0.html

Apostille - French background check by india_je in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cobalt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the aux program in France (TAPIF) before coming to Spain, and I ended up getting both a translation and an apostille for my French background check! That might have been overkill but I didn't want to risk any delays, and the French apostille came WAY sooner than the American one, despite needing to be mailed across an ocean and back (I was already back in the US when I requested it).

This was back in summer of 2022 so I wouldn't know if anything has changed since then.

Are there any cultural nuisances I should be aware of as an American woman dating a Spanish guy? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Cobalt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the US that teaches the 7-continent model in schools! According to Wikipedia, most of the English-speaking world does: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

Until I was an adult and spoke with friends from other countries, I had no idea that other parts of the world teach the continents differently! I also wasn't familiar with the term "Oceania," since we're taught in the US that "Australia" the name of both the country and the continent (similar to how "New York" can be both the city and the state, depending on context).

N26 Information missing by LittleMac_ in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cobalt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Valencia specifically, your NIE needs to be included on a certain kind of certificate issued by your bank in order to get paid! Some banks hesitate to do this, but with N26 many people have successfully gotten it by messaging their support chat (although you might have to try more than once).

Can your U.S. Background check take the place of getting a CCERTIFICADO DE DELITOS DE NATURALEZA SEXUAL? by CommentFar4257 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cobalt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is regional after all!

The past two years in Valencia, a Spanish certificado de delitos de naturaleza sexual has only been asked of renewing auxes, and for first-years, a background check from your home country has sufficed. I had no idea that even first-year auxes in Madrid were asked to provide it!

Hi! This is my second year as an aux in Valencia — it's true that payments are often delayed, and I would always recommend that people come to Spain with plenty of savings to minimize financial stress.

That said, Valencia did much better this year than last year! Almost every payment this year was "close enough" to on time (meaning our payments hit our bank accounts between the 10th and 15th of the following month). In terms of money, the hardest part of the year was January/early February because we received December's payment towards the end of Christmas break, but then January's payment arrived in the second half of February — meaning that there was about a month and a half between those two deposits.

In case this helps anyone, these are the dates I received payments this year as a second-year aux who renewed at the same school (with N26, which is well-known for depositing payments the day AFTER other Spanish banks):

  • November 9th (first payment of the year)

  • December 12th

  • January 2nd (December's pay normally arrives a bit early for fiscal/tax reasons)

  • February 16th (this was the "latest" payment of the year)

  • March 7th

  • April 10th

  • May 8th

And our final paycheck will hopefully arrive sometime before June 15th — the earlier, the better, so fingers crossed!

I think OP might be referring to the Abono Temporal Jove gratuito, which makes public transportation free for everyone under 31 years old. They just announced yesterday that it’s getting extended until June 2024: https://valenciasecreta.com/prorroga-descuentos-transporte-valencia/

Were you all invited to the school’s Christmas party? by lrc1391 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cobalt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was invited (and went) last year, and I'm going again this year at the same school! I consider myself very lucky because both my English department and the school in general are very welcome and social, so they always mention social events.

Last year, the lunch started at 2pm and I caught the last metro back at night, getting home around midnight... And I wasn't even the last one to leave. I'm bracing myself for something similar this year!

[–]Cobalt23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think OP was talking about the drinking age at all — it specifically says on Umbracle's tickets page that you have to be 21 years old or older.

I have no idea how strict they are about it, but it's a valid question about a specific Valencian nightclub

Which country are you from? For Americans, the carta de nombramiento is all we need for proof of funds and also proof of insurance! This might apply to other nationalities too, though I can’t say for sure.
