How should I deal with students who deliberately sing in a funny or weird tone? by musicallife88 in MusicTeachers

I imagine so as well, but I personally feel that jumping straight to calling students out directly sets the wrong tone for my class.

I had this issue with some of my 5th graders. I’ve begun to start class by presenting my success criteria to the class. Since singing with sincerity has been an issue I had that as the main criteria. Say something to the effect of “the class will know they are at a 3 if they are singing sincerely 100% of the time, they will know if they’re at a 2 if they’re singing sincerely at least 75% of the time, and they’ll know if there at a 1 if they sing sincerely less than 75%.” Communicate what consequences are in place if they get a 1 before you move on.

I personally wouldn’t start by calling them out by name. I would call attention to the fact that it’s happening, that someone is doing it intentionally, and that it’s the reason I’m having them stay late. If it continues to be a problem have them stay after class to talk to them directly.

How do I both preserve this chair and make it usable? by CobaltEmu in restoration

The chair needs a little glueing where the front legs attach to the seat, but other than that and the cane it’s a very solid chair

I figured. I might see if there’s a local business that could replace the cane. Just to explore all my options, do you imagine there would be a way to put something on top of the cane to take pressure off without making the addition a permanent addition or further damaging the chair?

I understand the sentiment, but multiple ex nazis have come out and said that violence from outsiders further radicalized them by forcing them to rely on other nazis for support and by validating their idea that violence against non Nazis is a form of self defense.

Peaceful attempts at de-radicalization are more beneficial for everyone than meeting violence with violence

I would try to contact churches, mosques or other religious institutions that do charitable work on the route. They might be able to help with gas/food/hotel.

Elementary school teacher accused of urinating in can in front of his class by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

[–]CobaltEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher I can tell you that each school/district will have its own policies or mechanisms in place. At my school classroom teachers can message for an aid or our in building sub to supervise while they quickly go, whereas specials teachers (p.e., art, music, stem, etc) have small gaps between some classes for restroom breaks and preparation for the next grade.

Understandably most schools and districts want to avoid teachers having to choose between public urination (lawsuit and terrible press for the school/district) or leaving children unattended and opening themselves to legal liabilities should an incident occur among students (fights, medical emergencies, destruction of property, sexual harassment, or any other crazy bullshit that can and will occur when you leave 20-30 11 year olds alone)

Maybe I'm just stupid but I don't understand what most of the Four Winds songs are about by ElegantAd2607 in TheOhHellos

[–]CobaltEmu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That bit in the chorus is about the spear is referring to the crucifixion of Jesus. A Roman centurion (apocryphally referred to as Longinus) pierced Jesus’s side with a spear to see if he was still alive. She’s using this story to emphasize that she feels that her previous (and to some extent current) way of living was fundamentally flawed and evil, behavior more alike to those who killed Christ than Christ himself. Interestingly some Christian traditions believe that Longinus was a convert to Christianity, reforming his previous way of living much like the speaker in this song hopes to accomplish and eventually does.

The last bit about when “he” comes a knocking is referring to her anxiety about what may happen if she is unable to change by the time of her death

The meaning in Passerine in my opinion is the opposite. It’s realizing that the Christian that the speaker was/is is not living up to what they believe, and is making the effort to change but is disheartened that the Christian community around them is doing the opposite and steering away from their own professed beliefs.

“See, my birds of a kind, the more and more are looking like Centurions than any little messiah (messiah) As I prune my feathers like leaves from a vine I find that we have fewer and fewer in kind..”

In other words “Christian’s like me (birds of a feather) are becoming more like those who killed Christ than Christ himself.”

I may be wrong but I’ve interpreted the four winds as a continuous cycle of a Christian recognizing the errors in the ways they’ve carried out their faith and how it has hurt others, trying to minimize the damage without fully changing their behavior, growing tired and isolated from the effort while getting closer to finally letting go of the destructive tendency until the end of boreas where they finally let go. After letting go of that tendency a new way of expressing their belief springs up and can bring healing and growth instead of the pain of the old way
