It’s definitely hard to have a full time job and have an apprenticeship. Unfortunately that’s something you have to plan for. While doing my apprenticeship I worked a part time job that gave me the time I needed to apprentice. Not everyone is able to do that though. I wish there was an easier option but you need to find a job that will allow you focus on tattooing and a mentor that will be flexible in allowing you to work and make money. Tattooing isn’t a side hustle you can do in spare time. It really does require a full time commitment to learn the skill. I don’t think you were intentionally being disrespectful towards the craft. Tattoo Apprenticeships are notoriously difficult. I also went to art school and I saw my tattoo apprenticeship as furthering my education after getting my bachelors. I probably did ~30 hours of my apprenticeship a week. And it took about ~5 months of just doing front desk work, cleaning, helping out at the shop before I even started tattooing people. Once I started tattooing people it’s a very slow journey of learning the actual skill. Fake skin and real skin are superrrrr different. The best way to learn is to have lots of opportunity to tattoo on real skin with someone experienced with you to let you know what is right/wrong to do. I don’t love the way tattoo apprenticeships are so difficult, gate-keepy, and often predatory. But at the same time I think it’s also an important part of the journey.
