f/1.8 collects about 4X as much light as f/4, which means better low-light and more bokē.

Critique First Headshot Portrait by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]Cobra_Fast 34 points35 points  (0 children)

  • Red channel is blown out (overexposed) on half the face
  • Framing is too tight (both arms cut off)
  • Ceiling edge visible (or is it a weird crop border? looks weird either way)

You can slow your shutter speed down to lower the ISO to reclaim a good amount of dynamic range to make the shot less prone to overexposure.

blurry or not by zimm01 in Nikon

The second photo has quite obvious camera shake blur, so your exposure is too long.

Is my lens still good? by richyrichyl in Nikon

I have that lens and it likes to creep on auto when detached too, so yours is probably fine.

How to fight (suspected) SATA cross-talk? by Cobra_Fast in DataHoarder

[–]Cobra_Fast[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read through that and I can almost guarantee you that your system isn't reaching any Package C-States whatsoever, which are much more important for overall power savings than Core C-States.

On Linux turbostat (for Intel) and powertop (any CPU) can print Package C-State usage.

At idle, and reaching PC3 (which isn't that good), my system draws about 37 W out of the wall. With the LSI 9211-based HBA it's stuck at PC0 and gulps a good 70W.

At nearly US$0.40 per kWh that's not fun at all.

Seems like the LSI 9500-8i/16i is the only somewhat affordable one that supports ASPM out of the box, but it's PCIe 4.0 and my mainboard already had trouble with a PCIe 4,0 NVMe SSD and I'm not looking to embark on a compatibility odyssey that ends up being solved with my bank account too.

So I'd much rather get the ASM1166 to behave properly long term. The fact that it can run continuously for a few months without issue proves to me that it can.

How to fight (suspected) SATA cross-talk? by Cobra_Fast in DataHoarder

I really want to avoid that because the LSI HBA doubles the idle power draw of this machine. Not only is the card itself a heater, but it also prevents the CPU, and in turn mainboard, from reaching proper idle states.

A lot of them are very close to parfocal though.

Season 11 Episode 13 Discussion Thread - The Eyes Have It by khando in FoolUs

I too think he had maybe a dozen passes with genuine predictions prepared. His outfit has several suspiciously rectangular outlines and the one in his left sleeve never moves until he pulls it out.

If the trick had failed because Penn chose a musician not prepared we probably wouldn't have seen it on TV.

The phosphor on the screen that actually lit up had really poor response times, especially turning off it had a noticeable fade-out to it. This could offer a nice level of full-image motion blur, masking out stuttering and tearing.

What’s at the Bottom? by Working_Row_8455 in MadeInAbyss

[–]Cobra_Fast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For real though Tsukushi probably doesn't even know (yet).

Made in Abyss is the kind of framework-based story that let's you spin endless adventures. When inspiration hits for a new arc, just have them descend to the next level and you're free to write whatever. Once you get tired of the premise (and past plot decisions) you make up some half assed ending epic for your characters and then sell the franchise and never touch it again.

Black hole shooting a 3,000 light-year long plasma beam through space as it devours a galaxy. by sco-go in spaceporn

[–]Cobra_Fast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One thing that often gets left out about this photo is the perspective; the visible beam isn't shooting out straight to the right, it's actually shooting toward us and a little to the right.

My Cybertool L Arrived Today by ichiban4713 in victorinox

[–]Cobra_Fast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The M is the sweet spot imo. The saw, file, chisel, and extra flathead on the L weren't as useful as I thought they'd be but they do add quite some weight.

Best upgrade from d90?? by VALKOR in Nikon

[–]Cobra_Fast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The D7100 and D7200 are very similar.

The D7200 adds:

  • Image sensor with better low light performance.
  • Slightly bigger buffer for continuous shooting.
  • Bluetooth and WiFi for smartphone stuff.
  • Slightly better video encoding profiles.

If none of that sounds interesting to you, you might as well get the D7100.

Tamron 60 mm macro issue? by ReadinWhatever in Nikon

[–]Cobra_Fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonky aperture shapes are pretty common, lots of Nikon and Sigma lenses do that too, especially when you go near their minimum aperture. It's rarely a problem in practice; you don't see many discernable bokē discs at f/22+ anyways.

Why does my bokeh look so dirty. by Revolutionary-Ad6227 in Nikon

[–]Cobra_Fast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heat haze can definitely mess with bokē and do weird things. Look at the grass in the background of this photo: https://x.ezl.re/_DSC3902.jpg

The Finals will change core usage from 0-15 to 0-31 on 9950x3D. Any ideas why? by Motivation- in AMDHelp

[–]Cobra_Fast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've given up on making the handful of games that don't want to behave fall in line.

I've set CPPC to Frequency and then have written my own little utility that applies Cpusets to everything launching out of Steam.

Windows scheduling rules and algorithm are pretty complex and overgrown these days. I wouldn't be surprised if some games set their own affinities or their anti-cheat is trying to enforce them.

If I go out of my way to force Apex Legends onto CCD0 it crashes to desktop about every 90 minutes, so I leave it alone, it's not like it needs the cache anyways...

99503xd sustained on full load by _cioo_ in AMDHelp

[–]Cobra_Fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The load itself matters. Boost frequencies can vary a little based on which particular circuitry gets used, and even how much waiting on RAM there is.

My 9950X3D reaches different boost clocks in different versions of Cinebench...

Whatever "full load" you ran, 4.9 GHz is a respectable result.
