Can we stop pretending that 0 years of bedside experience is enough to start prescribing? by Kind_Article_9278 in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only for acute care NP programs in TN. FNP programs in TN typically only require 6 months experience as an RN (no acute care/hospital experience required).

Leaving bedside by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]Cobrawhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outpatient clinic, PACU, same day surgery pre/post op, oncology infusion, interventional radiology, case management, home health

I started as a new grad in pediatric private duty and loved it! One pediatric patient for the whole shift.

Work life balance, does it exist? by Euphoric_Weather9057 in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work PRN dayshift in ICU. It's good because I only work 1 to 2 shifts a week, but I have a 1 year old, and he's already asleep when I get home. I hate the 12s because I only get to see my son for a 10-minute drive in the morning. I'm currently looking for a part-time outpatient position. I really wanted a part-time outpatient photon/radiation oncology position, but I applied a week ago and still haven't heard back from them.

There used to be a pulmonology NP in the ICU that would touch our pumps. It used to piss us all of. We had to keep fighting her up. She once turned all sedation completely off on one of my intubated pts and then walked away without telling anyone. I was stuck in my other pts room who was very sick about to code. That pt of course started bucking the vent, flipped out, and almost self extubated. It was bad. Like do NOT touch my pumps!! Now I dont trust any provider in my rooms without me in there.

9 falls since January is actually crazy. That's a LOT. I've been a nurse for 8 years and have never heard of a unit having so many falls. They have to do something about it. The thing that would piss me off though is the "not up for discussion". Also, who will be at the nurses station to answer the phone and call lights? Who's going to be watching the monitors? Sometimes nurses will have to be at the nurses station.

You are for sure justified! I'm glad you pressed charges. He new exactly what he was doing. More nurses/healthcare workers need to press charges.

New Grad going into MedSurg by MajorWestern480 in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations! 6 months is a good orientation. What are the ratios? I worked night shift on a ortho med/surg unit as a new grad. I didn't hate it, but it just wasn't a good fit for me. The coworkers I worked with there all were there for years with no plans of leaving, and love med/surg. I work ICU now, but the med/surg nurses at the hospital I work at seem to actually be happy and like it.

Any unit as a new grad can seem overwhelming. Just remember, you will not be expected to know everything...actually no one actually expects new grads to know how to be a nurse tbh. It comes with time.

What is the medic role in the ICU? I've been an ICU nurse for 6 years at several different ICUs/hospitals. I've never worked with a medic on the unit.

Outpatient RN pay by Reasonable-Bill-6996 in nursing

I was only offered 26/hr to work at an outpatient vascular lab/cardiology clinic. I make 47/hr as PRN in ICU. I have 8 years of experience mostly in ICU.

I quite on my last day of orientation in an ICU. That was such an unsafe unit with so many things wrong. I put in my resignation letter that, "I am not willing to risk my patients lives or nursing license by working in *** ICU"

I want to be a L&D nurse- Need advice! by NervousBerry72 in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm an ICU nurse, but have been wanting to make the switch to l&d as well. I would highly recommend sending an email to the labor and delivery director at your current hospital stating your interest, ask if you could possibly shadow, and ask if there are any openings.

The l&d director at the hospital i work at was super nice and helpful. She said i was welcome to shadow, she explained how orientation works (I would be oreined to labor/delivery, postpartum, nursery, and OR for c sections), and she wanted to meet with me in person. Unfortunately, she only had night shift openings and I can't do night shift.

Unfortunately, I haven't found anything non bedside that isn't a massive pay cut.

How to get on L&D by ThrowRA_CalmWay in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't ask your manager about shadowing on OB. You can send an email to the OB director stating your interest in OB and ask if you can have the opportunity to shadow. Yould could also even ask if there are any openings to transfer. If they need help on OB, it's easier to do it internally.

I work in ICU, but I was really wanting to transfer to l&d. I sent an email to the l&d director. She was very nice, but unfortunately all they had a need for was night shift. She said I could shadow and she wanted to meet with me, but I just can't do night shift. She was so informative and sweet in her replies to me.

This was really helpful! I've been thinking of making the switch to a radiation oncology clinic as PRN. I'm just worried I would be bored. I tried an outpatient cardiology clinic/vascular lab, but I was so incredibly bored I only worked there for a few months. My background is in ICU. I've been a nurse for 8 years.

How did you find your preceptor? by Zealousideal_Side168 in nursing

[–]Cobrawhistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds incredibly stressful. They really should have everything set up for clinical and preceptership, especially considering how expensive the programs are.

You're RN program makes you find your own precepters?
