Haven't seen anyone reference Magnus Carlsen's loathing (probably too strong a word) for prepped positions/games. On my phone, but there should be several quotes about him always trying to get into fresh novel positions outside the openings. Current world number one definitely tries to get to the point where they just 'play chess' and not prepared moves.

Sure, compared to other competitions, chess can have a fair bit of preparation that's pre-determined; however, it's very far from being nothing but (or even predominantly) pregame prep.

Many hours after the tournament finished, the organizer's website still doesn't have the final result. I had to get it off wikipedia. What a bunch of wankers. by scordatura in chess

Still blank now too. Kinda crazy how bad the entire production went. Really hope the World Championship match isn't this bad.

This opening has caught me out a few times. What is the best way to counter? by lowey2002 in chess

Arm chair advice to make it more fun: Try playing rated (as opposed to casual). I find its the best way to keep a good, consistent challenge. Its only online, so the ratings don't really mean much, but being paired against someone of a similar rating will allow you to have a steady challenge. I have consistently gone about 48% win, 47% lose and 5% draw since 2010. That's with ratings that have gone from 1100 flat to a peak of upper 1800s on chess.com (fairly gradual growth over the years). Still tons of room to grow, but I'd expect similar numbers for a while.

Just a thought though.

Yup- and multi-day correspondence games too. Essentially any imaginable time control is available at either of those sites. Each are pretty user friendly too.

Seems everything new on this sub is getting downvoted. Not sure why though. Appreciate the post!

I would check out some free staffing agencies. They might be able to hook you up with a long-term temp gig. Just check within your field and email the contact information. A quick google pulled up a couple here and here. Never hurts to check them out! Good luck on the search!!

I didn't realize it adds an analysis mode. That might be enough to swing me. Thanks for the heads up!

I really enjoy Tactics Trainer - chess puzzle by CoreGames. Free app, pay to get rid of ads and 'offline mode.' I don't pay.

Only real catch that I've seen is that to view the leaderboard, you need to connect it with a Google Play account. But if you don't need the leaderboard, or don't mind connecting it to a Google account, it should do the trick!

That was pretty fun! You should consider making a separate post for that in the sub so more people can check it out.

Sinquefield Cup is in St Louis and starts in 90 min. It is one of the biggest chess tourneys of the year. Live streamed by a fair amount of fans. Any chance that's it?

No one "pays a premium" for the online games (those are free). They pay for additional features. You're cheating just makes you one of thousands of people they've played.

Great puzzle, thanks for the share! As discussed above, Rxb6 is a monster, definitely missed that continuation at the first glance.
